Has a Seriously Struggling Canadian Airline Ever Been Fixed?

Post by pika »

AC's sagas are well documented and need no further discussion.

Question is, has there ever been a Canadian carrier that was on the brink (again, AC has been noted) that has cut routes/restructured/reorganized/etc and continued to operate as a successful company?

Yes. Canadian Airlines.

But the fix was pretty severe because they had to graft it onto Air Canada in order to save it.

Excellent example. Proof that if you mean anything in this country, you will somehow survive.

Canadian Airlines saved itself and now continues to operate as a successful company? I might disagree since I can't book a flight with them...

Canadian did a restructuring before that in the early 90's with AMR. Staff took pay cuts. Revenue Accounting was moved to Tulsa. A number of former American Airlines people moved into seniro positions.

Canadian only made money in 1988. Every other year was a loss.

Canada cannot support two full service airlines.

That was tongue in cheek. It took severe and draconian outside help in the form of the Federal Government to coerce Air Canada to take on that sinking ship. They couldn't afford to lose the western vote so they started pulling very large strings to save Canadian. Likewise, no Federal Government will risk the fallout if Air Canada fails despite their hand on the bible assertions to the contrary.

AC is sunk, it is only matter of time and the feds are not going to step up this time.. Milton folowed the well trodden route that was so in favour in the US until about a year ago...that is the shareholders are god (that would include Milton) and accordingly he sold everything off. AC now owns very little and has severe cash flow problems...it will all play out...

.

CAI was the sum of its parts through the various acquisitions ( Pacific Western, NordAir, Eastern Provincial, CP Air, WardAir and QuebecAir) from east to west. In other words any outfit with 2 jet engines that smoked became the property of Air Canada in the final shake out. It was due western votes or lack thereof – make no mistake about that. It certainly wasn’t a sound business decision, that is for sure and perhaps Air Canada may not survive.

The question is "has a seriously struggling airline Canadian airline ever been fixed?" I don't believe 7F hit the wall financially. They've been humming along since the good old days of Bradley Air Service.

I was told that Makivik bailed out First Air by buying them and restructuring. Is that not true? I'd call that struggling if it is.
