I was at the Boeing Everett plant for a tour last weekend and the guide almost scoffed when someone asked about winglets. He said "Those are old technology... it is all about the raked wings now, like on our 787 and the new 747-8..."

That might be, but I think raked wings are a much more integral part of the wing design and therefore harder to add "after market." If the numbers American is quoting are true, it is an impressive performance increase and well worth the investment. Even with today's (temporary) lower fuel prices.

Yes, just like on the 767-400, 777-300ER, and 777-200LR.

I saw a Delta 767-300 with winglets last night at JFK...they are huge....
