Farewell AME?
Hey guys, perhaps you can give me a little insight.
In this avaition career I've only worked for two companies. The experience and training were great, but the politics and lifestyle were absolutely crappy. One was corporate and the other was heavy. As an M1/M2 I'm starting to lose interest in this line of work due to the BS that Ive encountered. My resume is great, and I work hard, but I'm wondering if there is an actual place to work that is fun and positive, or is that just pie in the sky thinking? Is not getting paid for on-call the usual scene? No pay for OT? Are holidays available without getting the gears for taking them? The only company feedback that is recieved is negative, never positive? I could go on and on. Family life sucks and the people around me are divorced and drink for a passtime. Please tell me that it gets better than this!?

An AME recently started with us and was all happy that he actually now gets paid for O/T and actually gets the stats he is entitled too! I was really amazed!
I've worked for a few companies ,some better than others, but always got the basics!
Don't put up with that crap!
Cheers!

if you want to carry a phone or beeper for free,go ahead.
i would charge 500.00 to 1000.00 a month just for that!

...it's totally against the Canadian Labour Code to make you work overtime and not get paid. We are not slaves!
If you're doing it then it's your fault...if they threaten to fire you because of it then get it in writing because they can't.
If you continue to work for them in this technician starved industry it's your own problem.
Obviously BRV has worked for every company in the entire industry except the for the 4 that I have because he/she seems to think the have all the answers and that Managers(myself included) are all leftover assholes wanting to pad their own nests.
I believe that is the only reason I work...to pad my own nest...I don't work to pad anyone elses.
BRV please leave the industry if you hate it so much.
P.S. I'm not an asshole...

BVR,
well...if you're not a he or a she...maybe I'm missing something.
Who am I to tell you? I'm a professional who supports my industry and the people in it, who stands up for the good ones that work hard every day, have success and share that success with others in the industry. The ones with positive attitudes for those that are thinking of joining it. The ones that mentor these newbees and try to steer them right. The ones that don't bash their collegues...who after all end up paying your bills in the big cirlcle of business.
After all...it's you who says it's full of assholes, why wouldn't we want to change that if it were true?
I just can not believe the negativity in these maintenance streams on this website that should be supporting the industry. Does everyone think it is going to go away?
We're all going to use an airplane for some sort of travel in the future...I know I would like to think it was safe and worked on by professionals the take pride in their work and enjoy what they do...that's what I would want.
...not someone who hates it so much and is bitter because they can't do anything else and says "stay away from this industry" and "I charge $1000 a month because I can" blah blah blah...
I have spent days reading these threads and in my 20 years in the industry in Canada and the US I had no idea how bad I had it.
I think it's time to quit...
P.S. BRV how do you know how high I can count? I have all of my fingers and toes to help so I know I can count to 19

me again mr. neverblue
I've been doing this longer than you and the last thing i want to do is discourage a newbie from entering the business, but they need to know the reality of this gig.
this is not taught in school .
once again the dark side of the ''business'' is overlooked and never discussed here on this site and
this is what I'm talking about! ..................are you [neverblue] m1......? or m2?
it makes a BIG ,BIG ,BIG difference. you have the nerve to chastise me for making extra money for carrying a phone, and then say you are the reason that i get paid?
give your f#$) head a shake!
have you ever had one of [your types] threatening your job because the f@#$^% thing went A.O.G. and the company did not have parts in stock to fix it?.......oh, what to do!!!!
this happens every night!.....yes kids...every night!
walk a mile in my shoes ....oh holy one, in fact....25 years worth.
p.s. i don't care how high you can count!

Re: Farewell AME?
Whoa.. Boys. Maybe this might shed light on things.
We are losing people to transit, where they are being paid 30% more just by walking in the door.
Last week in the aft galley of a Emb 190, as I crawled aft into the aft compartment to dump the Lav tank I was asked by a lovely young Stew as to what I was doing. On my knees I replied " I'm saving the day" this was obviously my moment to shine.
Aircraft maintenance a good job? Yeah you might think so but it would help if you were stupid.

Dark side of aviation?
Is there a light side? heh heh.
As for a/c parts not being in stock, oh yeah. Happens all the time.
Lets see, a compression coil, I dropped one in the lavatory 10 minutes ago. Let me get it.

Re: Farewell AME?
I've fished a ice scoop out, FA's fault, told me it was a maint job to fish it out. After, my answer was vauge about the fate of the ice scoop ( I chucked it but I may have led the FA to beleive it was still in use). Yeah she got to load her own crap after that.
Dumped the hand sanitizer bottle down the lav, my fault, well I was doing the groomers job cause they were so goddam fat they couldn't squeeze their asses in the lav to do anything. Ops said it was a maint job again. Well we groomed the lav and let the APU MEL run to the limit, it didn't look to bad though, we didn't get the APU for two and a half months.
Dropped a mounting nut for the lav tray on the CRJ down the pooper tube, my fault, had my buddy in the fuse dumping a bucket of water down while I was at the other end with another bucket.
Good thing I grew up on a ranch, so I'm used to dealing with bull shit.

You know what strikes me, re-reading this thread; the biggest whiners are also the most incompetant. All the way accross the board, and every job I've ever worked at those who have no real god given tallent, just sit around and bitch. By and large, they're people who don't know how to fix fcuk all. If you know how to weld, braze, bash tin, and drive a rivet you can call the shots. The world's your oyster.
The poeple who I see as consistantly the most disapointed in this industry are those guys that thought they could just show up to work with thirty bucks with of Canadain Tire tools and ball point pen.
Everything they can, they defer; and they make excuses; they hide behind the rules so they never have to actually fix anything.
THEY are also always the ones filling out SMS reports because they've, "Indentified a tripping hazard"; an extension cord taped to the floor.
Unfortunately, there's an entire sub-culture of these leeches.
They should go to law school and get out of our hair.
Kind Regards,

It's just like preg testing a cow. Of course when you have your arm down the lav you don't have to worry about crap shooting out of the sink. I'll let you think about cow anatomy to figure that one out, but lets just say...my cheek has been rested on a lot of crappy places. (pun intended)
Re: Farewell AME?
Ha ha - Farm boy indeed. I have been involved in the 'preg-check' before, and yes, you are right. To the uninitiated, that would sound like some pretty confusing bovine plumbing.bombardierfixer wrote:It's just like preg testing a cow. Re: Farewell AME?
...I've been in aviation maintenance for over 20 years. I got my first job 4 months after graduating...4000 miles from home. I have never been unemployed...except by choice. I have never worked night shift. I have only had a 9-5 Monday to Friday jobs. I started making $18,000/year in 1989 and by 1995 after receiving my licence I was making $60,000. I now make close to $90,000(before any overtime)...just got a raise...and still a 9-5 secure job with fantastic benefits for me and my family.
...I have never worked for an airline or large MRO!
You can do whatever you want if you work hard enough at it. In 1989 I was told to run far from this industry. Instead...I took advantage of those that did and took their jobs.
I am an A.M.E. and I love my career.
...enough said?

Re: Farewell AME?
Now you have my curiosity aroused.
You get, "fantastic benefits for me and my family", eh? For the hundreds of thousands of teachers and government workers in this country a pension that gives 30% of your annual salary - based on the last five years work prior to retirement - would be considered industry standard. So you must be doing at least as well as that for it to be "fantastic".
It's also secure, decent paying, and never involves nights.
Do share where this company is! I promise not spread it around.

Re: Farewell AME?
...Nah...right now it's "poison free" here and I'd like to keep it that way.
Besides...it's not just one company...it's been all 4 companies I've worked for...and all those that my company has contracted for.
In 20 years I have never seen any AME fired because parts weren't available...unless it was their fault for them not being available.
I've never seen anybody fired for anything other then incompetance.
I've seen a lot of "parts changers" in my time...no real clue how to fix anything but sure know how to clear a snag and go home. They seem to always claim there's no parts available and try to blame it on someone else.
Right now...the balance is good, everyone does there job the best they can...and everyone helps each other no matter what.
And get this...they all love their job.
Why would I want that ruined with bitter, unhappy wheel spinners looking for a lucky break instead of working for it.
P.S. My kids think I have a real job...because it's what keeps food in their bellies and the latest X-Box game on the teli... the latter of which never would have been even considered by my parents when I was growing up.

Re: Farewell AME?
.If you know how to weld, braze, bash tin, and drive a rivet you can call the shots
Yeah with those "Golden Age" of aviation skills nowadays your probably working alone so you might not want to call the shots out loud.
With the industry's usual reactionary pitch, it will take quite a few skills just to remain working, probably those in the vertical trade doing the best as long as you don't mind away being your home. I was shocked to fly into many airports last summer in the USA that appeared to be under suspended animation. Absolutely dead, small and medium sized airports with absolutely nothing happening and with many locals in a state of denial. Good luck to us all and pity those who will be forced into retirement during the "Lead Age" of aviation.
