Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
Hy's is amazing, Gotham as well.
The Keg is good, however it is not beyond great. The best steak I ever had was at Gotham. You can also get a really great steak at Harry Carrie's in Chicago.

Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
I agree with Hedley and others that say the best steak is the one you cook yourself.
I'm lucky to live in an area that has large beef cattle farms in the surrounding counties.
The best cuts can be custom cut and ordered from your local butcher at quite reasonable prices.
Costco, believe it or not, has some of the best cuts I've seen under the brand name "Kirkland".

Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
I thought The Keg in Halifax was pretty good, the one downtown beside the Citadel. There's the Red Bull Inn in Pittsburgh that's excellent
I notice no one has suggested Le Bifteque in Montreal.

Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
#1= Montreal, Queue de Cheval $$$$$$$$...
You should go at least once in you're life.
And then you have all the mainline standard stuff like Le Biftheque, The Keg, Outback & Baton Rouge.
But what's up with Claude the french guy and his steak sandwich in CYXL,
he use to have his restaurant in the back corner of a bar on Front St.
I think he use to marinate his meat for 24 hours, is he still around?
Its nice to hear new spot's!

Regarding The Keg... I've been to probably half dozen different ones and I would say quality of food varied quite substantially. I recall the one in London I went to being really good and I never liked the Calgary one... never had a good meal in all the times I had gone.

In Montreal, Queue de Cheval is excellent but I guess no one here has been to Moishe's on St. Laurent. The best.
Siddely, You noticed that no one mentioned Le Bifteque. No surprise.

Anyone been to this place?

Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
I remember when that place opened, the first one on Cote de Liesse. Both the food and service were great. I quit going there 10 years ago for the same two reasons, and people tell me it's gotten worse since. I'd forgotten Moishe's. The tops. There used to be another place in Cleveland, The Sportsmen's Tavern, about a 15 minute walk from Lakefront Airport. Their T-bones were the best I've eaten.Siddely, You noticed that no one mentioned Le Bifteque. No surprise.
Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
Anybody for Black Angus in Toronto? Just meat with a dash of potato. NY Strip medium rare.
You can interpret that however you would like.
Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
for any of you guys lucky enough to have a job that lands you in Paris for a day or two.
Chez Robert et Louise.
Small, dingy, scary looking place. It has drapes over the windows so you can't see in, it only has a small sign above the door that says Restaurant and it's in a less touristy part of town.
BEST STEAK I EVER HAD.
Had the Rib Steak for Two with my wife while there on our honeymoon. The place is narrow so on one side is the bar and then the "kitchen" which is a large wood slab, used as a cutting board, with a HUGE marbled and aged Prime Rib primal on the board and a small stove. Along the other side, was 1 row of tables full of locals. Of course the centerpeice of the restaurant is a HUGE fireplace in the back. We ordered our meal, they sliced off a huge rib steak and threw it onto a metal sheet right in the fire along with our escargots and potatoes cooked in goose fat. When it was done they served us our steak on a cutting board and gave us each our own little cutting board with a knife and a fork... NO PLATES. A little mustard and sea salt on the table and that was it. BEST meal I had the whole trip and the trip was full of great meals!
Anyone who watches No Reservations with Anthony Bourdain on the travel channel or discovery may have seen him eat there. It was what drove me to try it and I have no regrets!
If you have the chance you have to try it!

Highly recommend.
...isn't he the best pilot you've ever seen?....Yeah he is ....except when I'm shaving.........
Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
The best I've had was a Medium-Rare Prime Rib at 360 Restaurant on the CN Tower. It was also the most expensive meal I've ever had, but worth every penny.
Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
We were in Thunder Bay on the weekend and ate at the Prospector, due to the good reports from you guys. Great meal, had the prime rib. Thanks for the tip. We also got introduced to Persians from the Persian Man in Thunder Bay. They get a thumbs up. Going to have to eat salad the rest of the week.
Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
Is Uncle Frank's Supper Club still open in YQT? Used to be to die for. That was the mid '80's.
I had a really good cheap steak at the Outback in YEG.
Another surprise was Earl's on Main in YWG. Known more for the scenery than the steaks, it was a pleasant surprise!
I kind of like it when I find a great steak someplace I don't expect one.

Hey Doc, you remember what part of town that Uncle Frank's is at? I'm thinking I recall the name, but I could be mistaken. I'm just a young fella still so if it did shut down in the 80's or early 90's, I'm probably wrong.

Re: Best STEAK HOUSE
OK, yeah I remember it for sure... should have just googled it in the first place. Sounds like it's still open... I'll have to give it a shot next time I'm in town. I got a buddy who lives out that way, close to the border, so I'm usually out there anyway.Doc wrote:Head towards the Nebing...on the right a couple miles past the airport.
