Canadian Forces in YYC

Post by CitationSov »

Anyone know what it up with the Canadian Forces buzzing my house which is totally off of any flight path?

2-3 times on Friday I looked outside as they were buzzing at about 1000AGL in the CF-18.

For reference I live just off the Bow River near Crowchild Trail.

I was also up at the airport yesterday and again they were taking off on 07-25.

Training you think? Something happening out at ColdLake?

There were two CF18's parked at Shell yesterday, I believe it had something to do with this:

Just stay off the golf course, they like to do strafing runs and drop bombs on them!

There was some ceremony at City Hall the other day that had to do with 4 Wing, and they were doing some flying around friday to get ready for it, then did flypasts at the ceremony. If I remember right, it had to do with them getting permission to enter the city or something along those lines... some traditional thing that coincides with 4 Wing celebrating the Centenial of flight this year.

The Annual Air Force Mess Diner was held in Calgary on Friday Evening. Probably a fly past for that event.

1000 feet is buzzing? Man you need to go to Iraq or Afganistan to understand Buzzing. And no they weren't targeting your house in particular.

The scene: Downsview Tower, summer 1956.
The phone rings and when I answered it, the woman on the other end sez "One of your big airplanes flew over my house so low it blew the laundry off of the clothes line........""
"Madam did you get the serial number off of the thing?"
"No, it was too high"
"What did it look like?"
"Well it had two big motors and two tails and it made a funny rattling noise".
"Could you see any markings on the wings?"
"No it was too high"
"Well madam if it had maple leaves on the wings it was ours, if it had red stars on the it, you wouldn't be on the phone complaining!"
End of conversation!

What is it with people complaining about something that might happen once, totally out of the blue, and only adds a tiny bit of extra noise to their day? The only time they've ever seen it occur and they're on the phone to the nearest ATS unit asking "Who was that? Why are they flying around? It seemed "really low". It was sooooo loud".

I was working in Medicine Hat one time and the Snowbirds came in to refuel. Now the CT-114 isn't a particularly quiet aircraft and there were 9 of them but sheesh, it was the only time they'd flown in in like 3 years. I started getting phone calls from people complaining about the noise almost immediately... like I was gonna tell the Snowbirds to go away for them. One woman called and after being told it was the Canadian Forces Snowbirds she was like "Who's that?" Maybe the Snowbirds should fly over more often so people at least get to know who they're complaining about. :p

Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?
