Back in the summer of 2000, there was a Q-400 in the Air Nova hangar in Halifax dressed up real snazzy in Lufthansa colors-- a demonstrator.Pratt wrote:I think the chances of the -400's are slim to nonexistant. It has been talked about and rumoured for years, mostly by the flight crews I think!!
Basically, all came down to money . . . aircraft too expensive, and of course the Air Canada's family financial crisis.

Air Canada to implement network and fleet realignment. Consistent with our previously announced restructuring plan and in order to achieve our profitability targets, Air Canada Jazz is boosting regional jet service to communities across Canada beginning with its summer 2005 schedule. These enhanced services at Jazz complement our growing network at the mainline as we expand to incorporate six additional Boeing 767 widebodies and 60 Embraer aircraft that will join our fleet beginning this year. The 767s are scheduled for service to international destinations, such as the Toronto-Rome route being introduced this summer, while the Embraer fleet will be deployed to increase frequency in current markets and for the start-up of new routes.
Air Canada Jazz is also growing with the addition of 15 Bombardier CRJ-705 aircraft to its fleet in May. An expanded Air Canada Jazz regional jet fleet will allow us to realign our network to ensure that we deploy the right aircraft type to meet travel demand in each market we serve. As the first generation of CRJ-100 aircraft allowed us to do in the Canada-U.S. transborder market almost 10 years ago, the arrival of these new generation regional jets is important as it will allow us to enhance service in many of our domestic markets by offering more comfort, choice in non-stop markets served and more frequencies than ever before.
With this realignment of our domestic network, service will be provided exclusively by Air Canada Jazz in the following cities effective May 3, 2005: Charlottetown, Fredericton, Saint John, Moncton, Quebec City and Thunder Bay; and effective October 1, 2005 in Regina, Saskatoon and Whitehorse.
Approximately 330 Air Canada mainline employees at these airports will be directly impacted by this commercial decision. While the transition is designed to be seamless to our customers, we realize it may be unsettling for our employees at these locations, so we’re making every reasonable effort to minimize the impact on them. Affected employees will have a number of options made available for them to choose from, as outlined in their respective collective agreements. For example, they may be able to transfer to other Air Canada locations at company expense, take a severance package, or, in some cases, avail themselves of the layoff provisions of their respective collective agreements. Air Canada will also be discussing with Jazz to review employment opportunities at Jazz.
To help answer employee questions and concerns, affected employees are being provided with extensive documentation and we have managers on location to provide the support needed for them to make informed decisions.

Here's a question for you...before things went south I had a type 1 recommend (i think it's called that...one where i personally have flown with the guy giving the recommend) and I just started updating a few months ago. Is the recommend and my original file still valid or would I have to ask to have my resume be handed in again?

Starting pay, with all the pay cuts, is about 35,500, 2nd yr is about 41500 then an hourly rate after that. It is status pay so it makes no difference what you fly. You will be placed on whatever aircraft has a vacancy, in whatever base has a vacancy, so it is possible that you could get an RJ position, not likely, but it is possible. The most junior captain in the company was hired in the first quarter of 1998, so it would appear that its about 7yrs to an upgrade.

However, highly unlikely that you would go into the left seat of an RJ because many people will have bid that position, and the company is obligated to award it internally prior to filling it from outside. It is most likely that for existing Jazz pilots, all things being equal the RJ will be more attractive than the Dash 8, although there will be some who will be unwilling to move from say Vancouver (where they unable to hold an RJ position) to Toronto or Montreal where they could.
So for the time being it is highly unlikely that a new hire will go into the RJ immediately, but depending on what happens in the future, it could happen again. In the former Air Nova, there was a time when a few new-hires went right into the BAe-146.

As a Jazz hopeful, can you tell me if they are still aiming for May interviews?

With so many pilots applying with the minimum credentials and more, how will the selection process work? Will there be an internal reference required?
I am sure there are some who just statred applying and some who have been updating their file every six months. Will this have any weight on if you get an interview.

Thanks for the well wishes chicken wings. Still waiting, but I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket. The resumes are out and circulating again. I'm sure the company does'nt expect us to just sit around doing nothing. If another opportunity comes along, I would be a fool not to take advantage of it.

Seeing as there hasn't been any hiring at Jazz for about half a decade, and in light of the fact they annulled the 'hiring pool' do to the quality of the resumes they are getting, how much time will the people they call for interviews have? Where are they going to set the bar? I've been giving Jazz my updates, but I don't know if anything will come of it... even with over 3100 hours and a couple hundred hours of jet time. Should I look at Jazz as a place that will call me? Or as a place that will call me 3 years from now if they are still hiring? Thanks in advance for any input.

Although we presently do not have an Initial Ground School scheduled, we appreciate hearing from pilot applicants for future positions.
Pilots operate Dash 8 and CRJ aircraft out of one of our five crew base locations: Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal or Halifax. In order to be considered for employment pilots must meet certain basic criteria:
possess a Canadian Airline Transport Pilot’s License (ATPL);
have a minimum of 1,500 hours fixed wing flight experience (only ½ of second officer time will be counted towards total flight experience);
have a minimum of 1,000 hours pilot in command (PIC) experience;
have a minimum of 500 hours multi-engine flight time;
hold a valid Transport Canada Class 1 Instrument Rating;
hold a valid Transport Canada Class 1 Medical;
must be able to obtain an Airport Restricted Area Access Clearance (i.e. security pass);
hold a current passport and any additional visa documentation required to operate aircraft within the USA;
have completed a High School diploma;
possess a personal computer with the ability to read Compact Disk (CD) media;
fluency in English; and
be legally entitled to work in Canada.
Pilot applicants far exceed the number of job vacancies available, so preference will be given to candidates with qualifications exceeding the basic requirements. Examples of such desirable qualifications include, but are not limited to:
experience in Airline Operations (i.e. CAR 705 operations);
turbine engine experience;
jet experience;
heavy aircraft (i.e. greater than 12,500 lbs. MTOW) experience;
post secondary education; and
French language ability.
The following questionnaire consists of 21 questions, designed to help us understand your skills and experience. After answering the questions, please attach your resume.
