Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
Nice to see good pilot decision making at work. (video is on top right)

WINTER HAVEN, FL -- Two men in a home-built airplane survived a brush with death Sunday when they landed their plane on Havendale Boulevard.
22-year-old pilot Kyle Davis and passenger Joe Surowiec were flying the plane for a friend to the Lakeland Sun n' Fun Fly-In from Winter Haven when the engine failed.
The event was captured by two cameras, one in the cockpit and the other facing the engine.
When the engine failed, Davis quickly begins looking for a place to land. The two men look at a number of fields, but determine that they are unable to land in those locations.
Instead, the men decide to land in the road, where cars and businesses can be seen passing by.
Deputies were called to the scene, but had little to do since no there was no damage or injuries involved.
Both Davis and Surowiec denied on-scene medical attention.

Let the speculation begin...
Fuel Starvation?
Fuel Starvation?
Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
If it was fuel it wasn't a lack of it. The engine was restarted a number of times. My theory is if ignition problems.

Wow! It was pretty amazing that he didn't hit any cars/signs/wires on that road!
Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
I can't believe anyone would fall for this. It's clearly a model. At the 0:39 second mark you can see how they have edited in some real footage of highways and cars. Wake up, people.

Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
even parked on the ground when you try to stop an engine it sometimes take a few sec to stop. in this vid the prop stops like its an on and off switch. The force of the air would keep the prop spinning for some time. And I doubt they have a prop brake on a homebuild

I doubt deputy sherrifs respond to fake videos.
Although when I was a rent-a-cop I've responded to more retarded things.

I'm calling bullsh
t ..
Two wanna be utube heroes
Watch as they cycle the starter/mags in the center of the panel
The mixture is on the sidewall, so we dont see the pilot pulling it
Why do they keep starting it to make it to the perfect point to do an "emergency landing"?
Prolly a rotax engine, hence the quick prop stoppage
The monkey on the right has his lines ready .. "That field over there?"
And the biggest concern was hitting the wing on a post, after clapping?????, and after a life or death experience
IMHO
Total BS

I believe these high compression engines with small props are unlikly to windmill. This is likely an accurate in air shut down, even if not an actual emergency.

If you look at the first copyright for the video its from Front Page Productions. They are an Audio/Video production company. I think anyone can figure it out from there.

Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
BS or not, it sure was a hell of a lot better than that stupid video of the plane losing it's wing. That was so blatantly fake it was laughable but still managed to hook a LOT of people in.

Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
I'm leaning towards real on this one.
It seems possible IMHO, that the owner of a A/V Production Co. would / might have camera's strapped to their plane without malicious intent.
However, the first time I saw this, I thought they seemed to be going awfully fast on the roll-out down the street. Dude is clapping and it looks like they're still booking along at a pretty good clip. I think I'd still be holding tight to my skirt and puckering up in anticipation of a light post, median or parked car.
Then again, speed is relative, and I've never landed on a street before, so my speed relative to a laundromat or used car lot has never been tested in a practical setting.
Am kind of curious as to what / why the passenger seemed to be touching on the dash. At one point, I swear he initiated the second engine re-start.
If I'm lining up for a road, and my passenger starts monkeying around, I think it would be time for some CRM ( Choice - Remark - Making ). " I said don't touch you #%^#@#$ "

Humm, when the engine initially "fails", the biggest a best landing site is just over his right shoulder!! Have a look on Google Earth and decide for yourself! I think the engine "failed" somewhere around 21st St NW and Leisure Drive.
I'm still thinking this is a publicity stunt that could have gone horribly wrong!

Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
I agree... he restarted the engine when he needed it and shut it off when his glide was looking good... cameras and voice recordings set up to capture it all... instant "hero" and 15 minutes of fame... people are fucked nowadays!Ghost Rider wrote:I'm calling bullsht ..

Hey that pilot looks familiar. Wasn't he the dude that stole the plane from Confederation College and flew to St. Louis.

What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

Re: Emergency Landing Caught on Tape
I call BS too.
Cameras perfectly positioned and both the inside and outside view is crystal clear.
The engine sounds like a RC model, and looked 'wrong' somehow.
'Only' available landing site was the road with NO cars even though opposite traffic has quite a few.
Landing was hard, no bounce, sudden pull over and stop, and "watch the wing" was perfection in acting.

Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?
