Cessna 188
Anyone fly one? Im wondering how they would be to own.
How do you know when your half way through a date with a Pilot? When they say "enough talk about flying, lets talk about me!"
Re: Cessna 188
What are you going to use it for? Having the second seat might be nice some times if you are just using it for your own pleasure, if you want to glider tow maybe take a look at a L-19 thats a fun bird!
For the record I have never flown one.

Re: Cessna 188
I have. What do you want to know?
I always thought a 188 would be cool to have as a toy. You can drop a 550 Lycoming into it but, honestly, if you AREN'T carrying a tank of chemical, it has GREAT performance. Very fun to fly, responsive....

I agree with Flybabe, good empty, bad loaded...Bonnaire conversions are good too.
But not my idea for a toy airplane.
Down south some guys have put turbines in them, recently as I read the Ag Air Update the have done one and it will be STC'D. That will make an airplane out of it for sure!
A bit like a squirrel on the ground with a strong crosswind, I remeber.

Re: Cessna 188
Why don't you just buy my C-185 then you get the same performance and you can carry four people and gear.
Re: Cessna 188
Well, all it would be is a toy, honestly. I swear I've heard of someone pulling the tank out and retrofitting the nose for a seat. I don't really think it would be all that comfortable, practical, or.. well.. legal.
Fun to play with but really - the 185 (or 180) idea might be better? At least you can take it somewhere with a friend.

Always wanted to work an airplane instead of just being a bus driver. I seen one for sale on barnstormers and wondered how they handle.

Re: Cessna 188
Another option is a Pawnee. They have great power/weight ratios without chemicals or towing gliders.
A funny quote I heard from a Cessna dealer about the 188. "If Cessna could destroy them all at the push of a button, they would."

Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Take the hoppper lid off, put friend in hopper, Go!
( he can sit in a milk crate or something)

Re: Cessna 188
Nacho.. lol
This was my 188 - it crashed a couple years ago, engine failure. Pilot was ok.

Re: Cessna 188
I would like to get into crop dusting and I thought a good way would be to buy my own cropduster. The price is right, $50,000 for 300hp. What do you think of the aircraft and how is the Agflying industry doing here in Canada?

Re: Cessna 188
How many hours do you have?? Have you ever sprayed before? Do you have an agricultural background? Are you known in your community? Do you know about crop types? Chemical types? Application rates?? Re-entry times?
You *could* do what you're thinking of but keep in mind that you are dealing with valuable commodities. An error on your part could cost the producer dearly.
I would recommend flying for an applicator first and developing a knowledge of the industry and, importantly, a reputation for yourself (preferably GOOD, lol).
I've said it before and I'll say it again - aerial application really isn't an entry level job. Some have done it but operators (and insurance companies) like to see a bit of flight experience first.
REGARDLESS - good luck!

Ok I'll bite..
As Flybabe said this is no entry level job but a guy has to start somewhere and if this is your call just do it!
50.000 for an Ag Truck these days are not going to get you 300 HP if you know what I mean:) a good one is going for more than that, buyer be aware.
Go get some dual time so you don't kill yourself and as for damaging farmers crops, try not to touch herbicides until you have some time doing this.
Or you can go the pilot way and then you have to get enroled in an Ag flying course that will be more than 1/3 of the cost of that 188. If you don't ,you can forget about it since the insurance will never kick in.
The beauty of flying your own airplane is that if you don't owe money on it then you don't have to insure it.(hull that is, you still need drft)
Canada has a very small industry, but if you farm yourself and or have farmers that will trust you enough to let you spray their crop, go for it. ( just get somebody with experience to teach you how to saty alive)
Flybabe, now that you are flying the big bird do you still remember when power was never enough and you had to nurse every take off and turn on that thing?

Re: Cessna 188
I dont know anything about cropdusting except that it is bad for your health, could easily get dirt poisoning or wrap yourself around a telephone pole. I want to get an airplane and if the airplane made me money, all the better.

Re: Cessna 188
The best thing would be to open up a Tim Horton's or an A&W and use the profits to buy an aircraft to fly for pleasure. It would probably make better financial sense in the long run.

Re: Cessna 188
Crop dusting is not bad for your health, a telephone pole up your a$$ is.
Professionals in the industry handle chemicals very carefully. Like I said, go get somebody to teach you how to do it and then worry about making money, if you do it the other way around, consider chemicals and telephone poles a serious hazard to your health.

Do I remember? Oh hell yes. I remember 160 gallons had me rotating at the point that I had corn tassles in my brakes. One hand on the stick, one on the flap ready to hit the dump handle. Good times
Quite frankly, there are days that even the BIG bird needs a bit more power. Close to 80 000 lbs gross on a high density sltitude day makes for interesting edge-of-the-seat flying - but I wouldn't trade it for anything
