Darn... wish that I had checked in this morning before heading out! :(

Still, had a great tour (I was with the SAE group, not the Scouts) and was very impressed with the facility, aircraft and personnel. I really look forward to the Hurricane MK XII rebuild as they were also built at CanCar in Fort William (although the website says that your aircraft is from Amherst). Here are a couple of my photos of the Kittyhawk from this morning:

Hey, that's me in the cockpit of the second photo.

Probably did take more shots... I'm temporarily blinded by all the flashes that went off today. Not that I could see too many stuffed under the dash as I was. :D

Looks like the CAF has gotten in a bit of trouble over their involvement.

There was an article in the Ottawa Citizen as well. You know what just burns my ass though? The article stated that we are not open to the public. Nothing could be further from the truth!!! All we ask is that you give us a call before hand so we can set you up with a tour guide! Getting into our hangar is FREE for Christ's sake!!!! How much more accessible and open to the public do you want?

Yep, took quite a few photos but only a few of the Kittyhawk...

By the way, I didn't flash you Meecka. Everything was so clean and shiny in that hangar that if I had used a flash, all of the photos would have been over-exposed!

:rant begins:

Yes, I can see how the government helping out Vintage Wings of Canada is an issue worth creating a stink over... it's clearly one of the worst uses of taxpayer money... In my opinion Vintage Wings is one of the few organizations that actually has the ability to make people proud to be Canadians. I've only met Mike Potter once, but I consider him to be an outstanding citizen, and the contribution he has made to preserving Canadian History is second to none.

Also in my opinion, Vintage Wings should have massive amounts of government funding, however, as far as I know this isn't the case. Why then is it a big deal to use a Canadian Aircraft to contribute to preserving Canadian History? Think of the training time the crew on the plane got. Think of the people that will get to see a P-40 flying in Canada, commemorating a Canadian flyer! Hopefully this blows over and people realize the contribution that VWOC is making to preserving part of our history.

:rant over:

I was hoping to be able to make it to the first open house this year, never had a chance to go to one of the open houses. I don't think I'll be able to though as I'll be starting a new job with Jazz at the start of the week and I don't think it would be a good idea to ask for time off! Haha. Maybe I'll make it to the next one.

I was with the guys banging away on the Lysander tailwheel, then did the cub / scout tour. They ask harder questions, like why can't I sit in it like she is?
Anyways did sneak in some shots of certain hard at work AME lying down on the job!

Wouldn't worry about the Cdn govt. getting their jocks in a knot seeing as they can justify repeatedly sending completely empty VIP Challenger jets on trans-Atlantic flights for training purposes. The money is being spent..it's just whether or not there is publicity around how it is done. Somehow the wrong person got wind of this and took it to the press.

I don`t think that one waste of our money justifies the other. As a taxpayer I`d prefer to pay for crew training versus transporting a billionaire`s collectables. No offence intended to VW and its supporters, I think they`re doing great work but I don`t think anyone should be surprised that this hit a nerve.

We're not really a museum.

Nope, not a dime. We depend on donations and one man's deeeeeeepppppp pockets.

Heard that an engine swap was needed when the P-40 was unwrapped at Gatineau. How soon before we get to see this bird flying in Canadian airspace?

I did engine runs in the P-40 this morning. It was gratifying to hear her take her first breath of Canadian air! After the setbacks Martin and I had to deal with. The earliest I could see the thing in the air would be a couple of weeks. Maintenance wise, I should have her buttoned up sometime next week. The rest of the delay will be the paperwork side. Gotta love TC!

:D She sounds VERY angry! LOTS of power, torques the whole airframe at iddle! And that was just at about 1100 rpm... Just imagine what she's gonna be like when we really pour the coals to her! The funnest thing I've gotten to do at work so far!

Very cool! How long have you been an AME for? I'm just about to start my first job after graduating from Canadore. Some day I hope to get a job working on vintage aircraft. I've been volunteering at CWH for about 10 years and plan to start helping with maintenance on my days off this summer.

Quite true that. A wry sense of humour those Brit aircraft designers have...
