DHC6 crash in Maldives
Word has it a DHC6 on floats had a "little mishap" I have on good authority that a MAT DHC 6 dipsy doodled into water ie Crashed ... All on board OK!!!
I have flown for MAT ( by all means a great experience), and have nothing bad to say.
This is the second accident in 2 years which raises the question???
How does A company employ and keep professional float pilots?????
Mat requires 2500 TT ...(fair)
1000 floats (seems reasonable)
1000 on type ( sure)
ATPL (????) I realize this is a Borek requirement and I get the fact that KBA needs this to insure the safety of its international Ops.
But my question is this.
How many pro float drivers have the night time and or are on there way to getting the night time for that requirement??
An ATPL does not a wise float pilot make. One cannot license common sense .
As the details of the second accident aren't with us I digress ... But the one in July 08 seemed to be PDM.
My two cents...
You have the floor

Re: Speaking of accidents!
Don't believe the pilots were trained by KBA. Don't know what night flying has to do with low flying a resort on a photo flight. I wonder if heads will roll?
What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

My point exactly.... Night flying has very little to do with what goes on down there!
I think KBA aand MAT are limiting the "Float Pilot" pool buy the ATPL requirement for Maldivian Ops.
Not to take away anything from the IFR Pilots.!!!!

Re: Speaking of accidents!
How did they manage to do that?
The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no
After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Water too thin?

Re: Speaking of accidents!
An ATPL is pretty much a requirement for most if not all 2 crew environments. You will also fly a considerable amount of time flying IFR down there. Unforunately a certain amount of pilots down there, have only flown the twotter.

have you phoned and told the chief pilot that?I think KBA aand MAT are limiting the "Float Pilot" pool buy the ATPL requirement for Maldivian Ops.
be sure too let us know how that goes for you.
I think that if you stick to the dotted lines when making the folds your might have some aviation success.

if you really wanted the job you'd get your A's.

One thing about the locals, they don't half ass anything!
Re: Speaking of accidents!
True... If I did want the job I would get my A's.
I just think that a professional float pilot who would do service to the environment down there is harder to come by because of the night requirement of the ATPL.
Yes the ATPL requirements do make a well rounded pilot. And for ferry flights it's a must. For 2 crew ... well.... when it comes to day VFR float ops I guess there would be an argument for both sides of that coin.
keep the comments flying!!!

Re: Speaking of accidents!
However you can have a well rounded pilot that can fly VFR day only float planes who does not hold an ATPL.Yes the ATPL requirements do make a well rounded pilot.
The ATPL has very little to do with day VFR float plane flying skills.

Re: DHC6 crash in Maldives
There are reasons for everything and its all based on the damn insurance man.
I know guys with A's who have less operational experience than the co-pilots they fly with. 2500hr cessna single instructors... Makes one wonder..
The A's are required as boreks otters do a lot more than just day vfr on floats in the d'ives. Ferry flights, ifr flights in the north in winter, offstrip and you name it. Sure a simple piece of paper from TC doesn't make you any better than someone else, but the knowledge required for those exams sure comes in handy!!

Re: DHC6 crash in Maldives
Its aweful that this happened? Can someone PM me if they know the nationality of the crew.
On a lighter note, I always hated 8Q-MAG when I was over there. I still have scars on my leg from being a clutz and falling off the float.

Looks like full flaps were out, or very close to it.
Wonder if that had anything to do with it.

roger.roger you obviously like to do nothing more than shitdisturb and try and get on peoples nerves, sorry to say that you won't be getting a rise out of me.
Re: DHC6 crash in Maldives
Wondering if KBA will rebuild the plane to flying condition in the Maldives, do they have the facilities to do so there. Or will it be shipped to Calgary to be rebuilt ??

i'd say its kinda hard for hydraulic pressure to hold the flaps up when the wings are ripped off...
looks like the same old story.. "watch this!!"......
Re: DHC6 crash in Maldives
The machine is a high time 200 series and is most likely at the end of its life. They do not have the facilities in male to rebuild. All of that would happen in canada.
Flap selector was in the up position and there were countless eye witness reports from guests and employees at the resort. We'll see what really comes out soon enough. Its as usual... all speculation.
