Who on the crew did we "ridicule". I think you're missing the point here. Take a breath and reread the thread.Moon The Loon wrote:Every one who has contributed to this thread has shown an unbelievable lack of compassion for the pilot who died.
The remaining flightcrew members were more than qualified to continue the flight. I have many contacts at Continental. This was an incident. They happen.
You should all be ashamed for being part of this industry. One day, it might be you being held to ridicule.
I was being facetious.

This thread does highlight some significant insecurities among some people who seem desperate to be taken seriously.

Re: We should teach F.O.s how to fly
Missed the point of the thread? Give your heads a shake. This is how it started:
"In light of the on board death of a Captain on a Continental flight recently, it has been brought to my attention by CNN and other credible news sources the inherent dangers of flying in commercial airliner where only one Pilot and a co-pilot is on board.
Well, who else do you think would be in the flight deck? Three, four, five pilots? How many billions of hours of uneventful flights have taken place since the demise of the FE station? How many pilots were on THIS FLIGHT?
"It was only by sure, luck that the two co-pilots on board the Continental flight happend to also hold pilots licenses and were somehow able to land the airplane successfully."
What a crock of shit. "Sheer luck"?? And then this:
"Almost certainly having been talked down by an air traffic controller."
Your ignorance of commercial aviation was signalled by your opening statement "It has been brought to my attention."
"Additionally, it was brought up that they should have notified the passengers of the Captains death so that it would give the passengers time to say good bye and possbly make last minute phone calls to loved ones,"
You have no concept of mob psychology.
"in the highly likely chance that the co-pilots were unable to land the aircraft successfully."
Your final crown of disrespect.
"Any Thoughts?"
If this thread was started as a joke, I can see being ridiculed for my reaction. But the ignorant and tasteless condemnations of the captain being old, and somehow culpable for his own demise by being "over 60" is less than childish. What does his age have to do with the title of this thread??
The other option is that the thread was started in earnest.. In which case, re-read THIS post from the top.

Easy there big guy. The only disrespect intended in this thread was directed at the media. Not Continental Airlines, the deceased pilot, the surviving pilots or the industry in general. Moon the loon and luckyboy, if you've ever watched CNN or any other news in your lives, you would understand what an accurate commentary this is on the modern media, and would find it hilarious
in fact, moon, your second response is so unbelievably naive, it could easily be considered sarcastic

I really really really hope that "Moon the Loon" is not a pilot. If he\she is a pilot we need a new set of tests prior to issue of licence.

F/Os should have 'I'm new' tags on their uniforms so people know to give them a little bit of slack...
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

I'll say this again, I think..no wait..you DID miss the point of this thread. You didn't detect the sarcasm in the 1st post? OP was summing up what the media was saying about the incident (how it was by sheer luck that the co-pilots were able to land, how ATC had to talk them down etc..)and the OP was poking fun at it by using sarcasm. Everyone else here got it.
As for luckyboy, someone takes offense in just about every thread on avcanada. Sarcasm the poor man's joke? Well, most of us here ARE pilots...so yes, we will use all the poorman's jokes we can afford

Lighten up and pay attention!!! Not everything is what it seems boys. I enjoyed the sarcastic humor in the 1st post, why can't you?
Re: We should teach F.O.s how to fly
Back to the thread:
As much as I vote yes, I am also afraid that it is an impossibility. I have practised flying many times, usually when I walk and chew gum at the same time. Tried many times and usually end up flying 3-4 feet, so let's start by teaching the FO's to control the airplane, as teaching them to fly would also consist of throwing them off buildings and that would enable them to take sick leave so there won't be anybody to act as relief pilot. Although the throwing off building part is a tempting option.
Luckily there are a few more options.
It must be obvious by now that being a pilot is too stressful to do beyond age 50, therefore the pension contribution (paid by the company) should be raised to enable retirement at age 50 so the pilot can destroy his 3rd marriage more effectively.
To teach FO's about the airplane, every flight should be done with an enlarged crew and the captain will be 'resting' from top of climb to tod. (no, not time of death) as the hard part and optimum learning period is the first and last half hr. thereby also reducing the stress on the captains.
If a pilot passes away before retirement, a party should be given by the retirement fund, since they don't have to shell out cash for the next 20-30yrs on behalf of the individual.

Jeebus chryst.
This thread goes to show, once again, that there are more than a few people on this board need to harden the f*ck up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmXri8ZCKjc ), stop being so sensitive, stop taking postings by people you haven't met and likely never well so personally, and grab a sense of HaHaHa.
Loved the OP.

Re: We should teach F.O.s how to fly
I think you mean "sarcasm is the lowest form of wit." Saying only poor people use sarcasm is retarded. Oh hey look what wikipedia says:luckyboy wrote:Sarcasm is the poor man's joke. ...
"understanding the subtlety of this usage requires second-order interpretation of the speaker's intentions. This sophisticated understanding is lacking in people with brain damage, dementia and autism[3], and this perception has been located by MRI in the right parahippocampal gyrus.[4][5]
Understanding sarcasm is a very complicated process to grasp. It is considered to be one of the last and most advanced concepts for children to comprehend. It is usually not fully understood till the age of twelve and sometimes much later."
The more you know! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm

That being said...the following is also true in which I am guilty of.

However...everything in its place and this is an excellent point and the reason why this thread started...

Thanks for the back up guys.
I'm glad, (but not suprised) that most people got it. It was written tongue in cheek and meant to be facetious.
As for moon the loon, I'm starting to think he's trolling. At least I hope so.
But just in case, I would like to make it clear, that there was no malicious intent in the original post. Merely a commentary on media and public perceptions of our proffession. I just figured a forum full of private and proffessional pilots would find the humour in it.

This has been one of the most childish threads I've ever seen on this or the "other" (mainline) forum.
My biggest mistake was joining it.
Hotel Tango - You started this thread with what you purported to be your own words, followed by a serious question.
What do you think this or any other forum is? A closed sandbox with pre-determined participants? A "subtle" "commentary" on a subject with which you and others have a demonstrated lack of experience?
Grow up. It is open to the world. Learn from other people's perspective, or ridicule them. It's your choice.
All of you.
This isn't a business you can crib your way out of. Shit happens, then people die. If you feel you need to make light of that fact, Canadian aviation is headed for the toilet.

He has no sense of humour. He still doesn't get it?
More dumb questions!
I took my grandma out on one of my XC's during training..
"No grandma, I'M going to fly it"
"Ohh... is one of the big pilots going to come?"
"You're pretty young to be the pilot how long have you been flying??"
"Including today?"
On landing,
"What's that horn are we going to crash??"
"They've got missile lock; evasive action!!"
PS, I'm totally wearing this to work!!
