The Canadian Press

A search is underway in northern Quebec for a helicopter that did not arrive at its destination.

The helicopter owned by Canadian Helicopters left Kangirsuk Friday night with two men on board, Capt. Mike Robert of Canadian Forces Base Trenton said.

The helicopter was supposed to land in Kangiqsujuaq about an hour later to refuel, but never showed up.

Both communities are on the Ungava Peninsula in northern Quebec, several hundred kilometres south of Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Two Hercules transports and a Cormorant helicopter have been searching ever since, but so far rescuers haven't found anything, Robert said.

He said the search terrain is "pretty rugged" with steep valleys and temperatures at night dipping to 5 C or lower.

A RESCUE 324 Herc flt left just after we landed at 1025 local here in YFB for a position in N Quebec, so I guess the search is still on.

Here's hoping it's all good.

Working at the airport in CYFB there has been no news or update that I have heard of, good or bad.

Search resumes for missing helicopter crew

The search resumed Tuesday for a helicopter and two men missing in the northern Quebec territory of Nunavik since Friday.

Two men were on the helicopter, which is owned by Canadian Helicopters. Their names were not released but one is from Gander, is in his mid-30s and employed by the helicopter company.

The helicopter left Kangirsuk, a village on the west coast of Ungava Bay, to Kangirsujjuaq where it was expected to stop for fuel, but didn't arrive.

Capt. Mark Peebles, the public affairs officer for the search and rescue centre in Trenton, Ont., which is co-ordinating the search, said searchers are now focusing on an area last indicated by the chopper's satellite tracker.
"[It's] very challenging terrain over which they're flying and that they're looking through. It's very steep, very rugged terrain, lots of inlets," he said.

"There's a lot of snowy patches which you can understand makes it even more challenging when you're dealing with a helicopter that is painted white with a red stripe."

Peebles said the search area is about 50 kilometres by 110 kilometres.

2 found dead in Nunavik chopper crash

The search for two men aboard a helicopter that went missing in northern Quebec last week ended tragically Thursday when both were found dead.

Military searchers, as well as Canadian Rangers in Quebec's northerly Nunavik region, had spent the last six days searching for the men, who never arrived as planned July 17 on a flight from Kangirsuk to Kangiqsujjuaq, Que.

The men's names have not been released. The aircraft is owned by Canadian Helicopters.

On Thursday afternoon, Canadian Rangers in a boat spotted the helicopter upside-down in a ravine about 290 kilometres northwest of Kuujjuaq, Que. Both occupants were dead.

At the time of the discovery, the Rangers — a reserve unit of the Canadian Forces — were searching the coast between Quaqtaq and Kangirsuk.

Search officials with the Canadian Forces Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Trenton, Ont., had been overseeing aerial and nautical searches for the helicopter. The Rangers began searching on Wednesday.
