gwones is spot on about the communications courses. The English evaluations are to see which communications course(s) they will be putting us in. I got a phone call from the school about a month ago asking about it but I explained I had a pending transfer credit request to get exempt from taking them and that was it.

From what I understand, the English assessment determines whether you are put in a shorter or longer English class (per week) which is determined by your score. I was told it was a bunch of questions followed by an essay.

I was wondering if any current students, or past, who have completed their summer training could tell me the average length of the training. I was told that you may do it as quick as you please, which would be nice as my brother is getting married this coming July.

Thanks guys!

It will depend on a lot of things, mainly when you finish your PPL. I would say most students are finished by the end of July, but this will vary year to year with class sizes. It is possible to finish earlier. And unless you are far behind, they're quite lenient on letting you leave for a week or two at any time.

Hey guys

I am sure many of you will find Confed, as I did, an experience of a lifetime. Having never left southern ontario, it was certainly an adventure, for me anyways. I think most of your questions have been answered. As long as you can find the happy medium between having fun and hitting the books, you will be fine. You dont have to be a rocket scientist to pass, despite what Seneca or Sault will have you think. Confed also has a great reputation outside of bush flying, and its graduates are represented across the industry.

Some of my best memories were x-countries, float flying, partying, skiing, climbing mount mckay. The program and instructors are top notch. Enjoy your time. Grad '03, going into my 2nd year as a corporate jet captainn flying N America and the Carribean. Worked the dock, flew floats, medevac and now corporate. Wouldnt change a thing. Best of luck guys!

Does anybody know if there is a math assessment test? I now know that there is one for english for sure. I think I've read, somewhere from the college website, that all new first years are to write the math assessment test as well as the english one but this one will be on the 9th @ 4pm.

Cheers,

There are two math exemption tests. The individual should get 80% of the first one, then will be eligible to take the 2nd one; which should be achieved 60 % to be exempted of math.

I just got the registration package in the mail today. I read it over and what sez posted above is correct. From what I understood, all new students will write that assessment test to see if the student will require additional help during the school year. If you score 80%+ on the assessment test, you can write an exemption test and be exempt from taking the first semester math course. The refresher course or summer upgrade course are optional, and are meant for those who don't have the high school math requirements.

An aside thing, have any of you guys decided on how you're going to travel to Thunder Bay? I purchased a ticket last night to fly up on move-in weekend. Both AC and Westjet have a seat sale going on for flights from Toronto-Thunder Bay, with the tickets @ $99-105 (+taxes) for a flight on move-in weekend. A week ago these seats were $150-165 (+taxes), so the prices are probably as good as they're going to get.

math shmath.
anyone know about that two week refresher course or the online course. does that exempt you from the evaluation test?
definetely gonna need that knowledge of derivatives and calc when filing my flight plan. i'm guessing math is gonna be one of those weeding out courses that's gonna blind side some people and get their butts kicked out. i hear its not hard(high school stuff all over again) but like with anything, if you don't practice what you learn, you're screwed.
also just wondering...
does the college have some kind of ranking system for the flight program? and are they still offering the AC Jazz award interview thing to the top students? im just curious because i hear alot of employers scoop up potential pilots even before they have graduated. but how do they know who to recruit?

almost there boys and girls. start your engines :D

The math is the most basic technical math course you could get(no derivatives, it's easier than grade 12 calc). Maybe a student or two will fail, nothing to worry about.

Yes, they are apart of the Jazz award. Every student is eligible but must apply for it. Some of the variables in their selection are an interview, sim evaluation, and an evaluation from your fellow peers. You could say personality is a greater factor than your marks.

I was wondering whether any past/present students at Confed have also been in the reserves, and if that was manageable at all with the summer and weekend flying schedules? A typical commitment to the CF would be one evening a week and a weekend or two per month during the school year, followed by summer training lasting anywhere between 1-4 months depending on the course. Just trying to gauge how lenient they would be or if there has been a precedent before. Thanks!

Hey guys, it's the registration day.

Anyone decide which elective of the two(Exploring Human Diversity, and Interpersonal Communication) to select? I chose Exploring Human Diversity but when I checked the Reg Availability, more people were registered into the Inter Comm course rather than the other. Now I'm considering a switch.. lol

Any opinions? I understand what I learn is more important but should I be looking into a more easier elective course? or should I settle with the Human Div course?

Cheers, almost September

gwones, I went ahead and registered for Block A today (I prefer the idea of flying in the morning while the weather is calm, and doing the academics in the afternoon, and ultimately finishing earlier in the day as compared to Block B). As for my elective, I chose the Interpersonal Communication class, however, I am 99% sure I will be switching it to the Human Diversity class as it seems a lot more interesting and better suited for me. What block did you register for?

Hey there Typhoon! I'm also in Block A! and for the elective, I'm currently in Human Diversity but am considering a switch .. only problem with the Inter Comm is that I'm not a "great" presentation giver so.. I'm not too sure lol I might as well just stay and work my way through the course.

Anyways, meet ya there soon? :)

Thanks for the reply :D that's the exact reason why I'm probably going to switch, I've always disliked giving presentations (I can do them, but prefer not to) and the idea of role-playing and such doesn't seem that interesting to me, where as I guess I've always had an interest with how different cultures and such do things. Human Div sounds like a harder course, but what's the point taking the easy way out :P

I've emailed registration service to try and find out how to switch classes, but was wondering if you had any idea how to do that? Also, how do you view the availability of the class through the banner system?

On a more general level, are you staying in res and if so do any of you have cars/ how are you getting up there (I'm flying up with Jazz on Sept. 4)?

Thanks.

No worries! I agree. I think I'm just going to stay in Human Div.

I think I went into my schedules and at the very bottom there is a link called "Active Registrations". Click the courses that you wish to see and when transferred to a new page, click the course name again. It'll show you the availability. I'd actually give you the exact details but the website seems to be down atm.

About switching, you'd get a quicker response by just calling them. For me e-mails took anywhere within ~2days to get a response.

I'm staying in res and flying there on Sept 5 but I'm actually getting a employer discount from my sister so my seat is not guaranteed.

Are you also going into res? Oh and btw if you're going on the 4th, are you paying the extra money to the residence for early move-in?

Hey guys, I also registered in Block A this morning. The Tuesday schedule looks like a real bitch!

An aside, I had to call registration services early this morning because of a hiccup with the system and left them a message. They got back to me within 2 hours and solved my problem right away. If you need to get a hold of them, don't hesitate to call and leave them a message.

As for getting there, I'm flying up on Sept 6 on Jazz.

Great, I'm going to go ahead and change my elective now. I called, and all you have to do is go back into the registration area, uncheck your current elective, then recheck the new one.

So you are going on C2 pass then or a C3 (lucky man if you get into Business Class)? I would've done the same with my Dad but we decided to use air miles instead.

With regards to Res, we are going to be staying a night at the Valhalla Inn (crew hotel) then moving in on the Saturday.

Nice to see another person in Block A :D, what did you choose for your elective?

Also what style rooms are you guys in? I've got a single w/ bathroom.

I'm not sure which of those 2 I fit in. I only know that the fare is somewhere around $54 but the seat isn't guaranteed :) Hopefully I get to go on the 5th hehe

About the phone number, the registrar's office is (807) 475-6213 give that a shot :)

I'm exempt from the elective course and the English classes because I was granted transfer credits for similar courses I took in university. I'm just thrilled that I got 3 hours cut out on Tuesday by not having the elective. I don't see how I would be able to pay attention from 6-9pm after such a long day.

As for room style, I got a super single w/o bathroom. I'm also going to be staying on the quiet floor, which I'm hoping will actually be quiet, lol.

So far it looks like we're all going into Block A. At least 4 of us who posted in this thread. White bird, it's up to you to get Block A to make it 5, lol.

The early morning flight from Toronto to Thunder Bay is always pretty packed. 6:30 I think it is...

You usually have a better chance on one of the afternoon flights if you're using a pass.

Quick question for all you guys in Block A. After switching my elective course and reprinting my time table, I noticed a little bit of a difference between my original schedule and my now new schedule. On Fridays as of right now, I have math in the morning and English in the afternoon. However, on the first schedule I printed earlier this morning, I had Math AND Aircraft systems in the morning (right after one another), then English in the afternoon. I'm just curious as to whether or not my new schedule is indeed correct or not (compared to yours), as all I did was change an elective and not the required course block. I printed this second schedule at 5pm tonight so maybe there was a glitch in their system this morning.

I will obviously call the office tomorrow if mine is indeed different than all of yours.

Thanks.

I think it's because that specific course is in conflict(time). If you look on the bottom, it will say so. I see the same thing on my schedule. If you click the course in conflict, you'll see there are two duplicate "time". I think thats why it's not displayed on the schedule. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
