Be Prepared Every Takeoff?

Post by nite raider »

From WFAA.com (WFAA-TV Dallas Fort Worth)
For the third time in a five-day period, pilots on an American Airlines flight were forced to make an emergency landing due to engine problems. The Allied Pilots Association said it's a troubling trend that is only growing.
"A pilot might go a whole career without having an engine failure," said APA spokesman Scott Shankland. "Now, we're telling our guys you need to be prepared to deal with this every time you do a takeoff."
OMG...Now we have to be prepared for an engine failure every time we do a takeoff? What's next...being prepared to navigate around thunderstorms every time they are forecast? I'm getting tired just thinking about all this extra preparedness.

The APA could raise this arguement with FAA as support for shortening duty days to account for this added burden. Yeah, that's the ticket!

I love the way newspapers and reporters provide "quotes". It's unlikely that he said it exactly as it's printed. More likely he was commenting on a negative trend and saying how they are getting the word out to pilots that it is more likely to happen than before as a strike against complacency. Because experience is the best teacher and years and years of near 100% reliability does tend to teach us that engines don't fail and we let down our guard just a bit. A little wake up message is never a bad thing.

But you're absolutely right that whatever we fly, single or multi, we should always be totally prepared for an engine failure every single time - no matter how uncommon they may be.

That quote is so stupid, it must have been misheard. Typical mindless sensationalism from some attention whore trying to get a story from nothing. Is the average person supposed to read that and think, "oh...good to know, NOW they're preparing for the unexpected." As if on all the previous flights ever made the guys up front were just hoping for the best. Thanks newsman, for keeping us in the loop!

Yea, must be a mis-teak there.

I mean, the 705 drivers go to sim every 6 months to prepare for it, many of the 704 drivers go annually and do it repeatedly till they get it right, and to beat it all, those who've been flying multi-engine planes for 13,000 hours have had 15 years' ± consolidated preparedness.

It's clear we need for an attitude adjustment to "deal with the possibility of an engine failure on takeoff"...

No misquote...watch the video. This has nothing to do with the newsman. The APA spokesman has quite obviously made himself available to the media to blow his union horn. This moron is telling Joe Public that American Airlines pilots have been reminded by their union to be prepared to deal with engine failures every day.

Go ahead...give your pilots an internal reminder, but a public message basically admitting that some may be unprepared???

What an embarrassment.
