Aztec down at CYFD
Just saw on the local news that there was a Piper Aztec down after takeoff at CYFD today. Not much for details on the news, said it was a single pilot (pilot is supposed to be ok, "bump on the head"), hit a tree or something after takeoff and went down in a corn field. Brantford Flying Club aircraft??
Hope the pilot is actually ok if anyone on here knows them. Is it just me or does there seem to be a rash of light aircraft crashes this summer??

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
That lucky pilot picked a good airplane to hit a tree with. Aztecs are built like a tank.!!

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
No it wasn't the club Aztec, it was a privately owned one. They went down in a cornfield off runway 29 just after 5pm, pilot was walking around with the emerge crews afterwards so I assume they are ok. No idea what lead up to it, but there was no fire fortunately. No idea what the plane is like as it was some ways into the corn field, a plane was flying spotter to lead the responders in to it as you couldn't see it from the airport.

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
I parted out two Aztecs this summer and was impressed by how much steel tubing was around the cabin and nose.... It took a few cutting blades to get through it all, but I think the Aztec would be a good plane to walk away from in a collision.

A couple of Aztecs we were parting out in YCW that decided to go flying on their own during a windstorm...AntiNakedMan wrote:I parted out two Aztecs this summer and was impressed by how much steel tubing was around the cabin and nose.... Tough planes! Glad to hear everybody is okay!
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Are those those two smashed up planes beside Upper Valley there?

Yup.

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
we had one years ago that bellied into a frozen lake after both engines flamed out in imc conditions, slide along the ice for a ways, lifted it by chopper and brought it back, put the wheels down and rolled it into the hangar, next morning it fired right back up again, but she was done, lots of bent tubes in the belly, very tough structure

It says here:

Who took over? I thought there was only one occupantone engine seized shortly after takeover

Most aeroplanes take-off; Aztecs, however, take-over the entire sky!Finn47 wrote: Who took over? I thought there was only one occupant![]()
Re: Aztec down at CYFD
Is an engine failure after takeoff in a twin a good reason to crash?
Re: Aztec down at CYFD
Runway 29 is the shorty (2600ft) little room to come back down on that runway after a problem with a twin, so yeah cornfield it is if you really have to come down.
If it's parked outside the cause is problably weed growth & pollen blocked intake.....
as the weeds & grass often grow 2-3ft high on taxi and apron surfaces at YFD...... (sorry could not resist) Good the pilot walked!.

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
From what I heard from some of the people there he took off runway 23 (the longest) and was experiencing some issues early in the take off but seemed to keep at it. Case of "get-there-itis" maybe?
Re: Aztec down at CYFD
I sit corrected - I am told this guy experienced the
engine failure BEFORE takeoff
engine failure BEFORE takeoff

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
It is good the pilot walked, but it is a real shame the plane was cracked up. When I saw the pics of the accident and saw the registration I was sad. I operated that Aztec on my 703 for approx a 12 months 6 or 7 years ago. It was a nice Aztec.

Maybe we should have a poll ?

None, even when in a twin.
Re: Aztec down at CYFD
I've seen it done with a DC-4.
How about on a B-52?
How about on a B-52?

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
The pilot did, in fact, attempt to takeoff with only one engine after he was unable to start the right engine during startup. It's not his first incident, it's not his first accident.

That is a joke, right?AUGER9 wrote:The pilot did, in fact, attempt to takeoff with only one engine after he was unable to start the right engine during startup. It's not his first incident, it's not his first accident.

"The Transportation Safety Board says the pilot tried to take off with only one of two engines."

There were several witnesses. He also admitted it to the TSB with no hassle. He really didn't care to be honest.

Re: Aztec down at CYFD
The 336 Skymaster will do it. The 337 has done it, but there have been a few crashes. It is now placarded against it in the cockpit.beaverbob wrote:nookie201 wrote:Maybe we should have a poll ?

I seriously would like to know how much effort this took to get it even close to takeoff speed. I had to taxi a Seminole on one engine and it took a ton of power and differential brakes (shudder) to get the thing up to a slow taxi speed.

That is one of the strangest things I have ever heard.AUGER9 wrote:The pilot did, in fact, attempt to takeoff with only one engine after he was unable to start the right engine during startup.
Couldn't be.
