Latest Chisel Charter Operator

Post by Pratt X 3 »

Using Kijiji he is at least keeping his advertising expenses in check. That would be if he was an actual business.
Sight seeing and short travel flights in southern / northern ontario and northern united states are available for 105$ / Hr up to 3 people. Which equates to 35 dollars a person. Airplane is based out of Oshawa Airport but can arrange pick up at any location.

This is ideal for:
- Univiersity / College students wanting to fly home at low cost.
- Anyone looking to take photographs of cottage / property.
- Anyone who would like to experience flying for the first time.
- Just enjoying the sights from the air such as the CN tower.

Notice how he tries to spin it so it sounds somewhat legit?

Prices seem reasonable, give him a call and see if he'll take us all for a ride. Tell him we're all from the local Transport office and we're looking for a cheap bulk rate!

Not sure what he proposes is illegal splitting the cost is legit
Hi All:

I recently bought my first airplane. It is a Piper Arrow( it is the plane in the picture). I love to fly but most of the time I go by myself because I can't anyone to go with me. That is why I am here.

If you would like to go for an airplane ride and split the cost of the fuel with me, then send me an email. My plane is out at Springbank airport(near Calaway park). I have been flying for 10 years now and have over 250 hours, and I always fly safe.

The operating cost is about $120 per hour. This is split evenly between all adults who fly. The plane burns between 8-12 gph depending on speed. Sorry the price has increased a small amount because of a 20% increase in fuel costs.

The plane has 4 seats, but the back seat is a bit tight.

I can carry 400 lbs of passengers.

An example of flight is a Banff flyover, about 1.3 hrs or about $150, split between 2 is $75 each.

Downtown Calgary flyover, about .7 hrs or about $80, spilt at $40 each

Please provide a phone number so I can call you when I am going flying?

If I have peeked your interest, then email me with a time and date you would like to go. I go flying whenever the weather is nice, so feel free to send me an email.

Thanks all, and have a good one.

The guy in Calgary is doing nothing wrong. So long as he has a license. The other guy is a bit dodgy and I sure as shit wouldnt send my family up with him. But who knows, maybe he's the new Maverick. I say good luck to them.

That one sentence saves his bacon - he is not flying
when the pax want - that's charter - he's flying when
he wants, which is explicitly permitted by CAR 401.28

There's a guy in yyz that posted an ad to do chisel charters on citation II. He put the ad in the Globe and Mail stating "Citation II looking for work".

I disagree. I think the guy in YYC will get busted.

What if I put this ad up?

"I fly YYC-YXD almost every morning. And I return just before supper time. Call me if you want to catch a ride. You only have to share the costs."

Technically, there is nothing wrong. But it sounds a lot like a scheduled air service.

I don't see the problem here...

If someone flys YYC - YXD everyday, finds people to fill the plane and then only charges the shared expenses. I think it's legit AND a good idea.

Same thing if it were a car.

Usually, sched air services try to make a profit. They charge more than the shared costs... well sometimes anyways.

Just to add...

The guy offering seats would need to do the trip anyways if no one wants to go with though.

But I said almost every day. I don't have to go every day if I don't want. I don't have a scheduled service I am just a private pilot who likes to fly. Maybe my kid is sick and I don't go. It is just coincidence that I have no one to fly with me that day.

And making money isn't a requirement of a scheduled air service. Lots of examples of that.

What about a "plane-pool". Share a plane trip back and forth to work. Everyone chips in for gas and landing fees. The pilot takes no money for his time. Is this illegal?

This is permitted by CAR 401.28, because the pax
are "incidental" to the flight - he would have made
the trip whether or not they are there, which is the
litmus test of 401.28.

Like I said, technically it appears acceptable. But I see no scenario where TC wouldn't be all over you.

Anyone willing to try it?

Trips like this happen all the time without TC's knowledge. If they don't know, they can't stop it.

It is the advertising for strangers to join you that gets TC riled. When they know about it they are forced to do something.

Really?

Like they do something about all the companies who flaunt every rule in the book?

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.

After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.
