Americans?
Hey all,
Just wondering what the legitimate odds are of an American, assuming the right to work in Canada, getting hired for a pilot job.
I may have that opportunity in the not too distant future and wanted to see if it was worth pursuing. Areas of interest would be BC and up north (actually south for me, as I'm in Alaska!). CMA, PASCO, Jazz, etc. AC or WJ in a few years....
Assume around 2500 TT + ATP when entering the Canadian job market. All opinions appreciated!

Re: Americans?
Do you have the right to work here? If so, then convert your licenses and it shouldn't be a problem.Yank wrote: Assume around 2500 TT + ATP when entering the Canadian job market. All opinions appreciated!

Re: Americans?
No one will care where your from, if you have the right to work here and posses all the licences and time its just a matter of applying.
Re: Americans?
Good to know.... I'm developing a relationship with a Canadian friend of mine that I'm hoping has the potential to go places... we'll see.
Thanks for the input.

I'll trade you my right to work in Canada for your US work privileges.

So you're looking to work for less money, eh? I'm sure your current employer would oblige.Lurch wrote:I'll trade you my right to work in Canada for your US work privileges.![]()

Lurch is on glue, his statement might have had some relevance in the last century. Not any more.
Low pay and lay-offs characterize the American scene these days. Canada's aviation industry is showing a modicum of stability and many pilots are cautiously optimistic.

Re: Americans?
maybe he was referring to the tax differences between the 2 countries. In some cases it can be a huge benefit to be under the american system.

Zat so...? I had beers with an AA F/O (a 19 year F/O at that) in Miami not to long ago. He had a 3000 sq ft home in Omaha Neb., worth about 300k last year.
He pays $7000 property tax to the city.
Same story a few weeks later, couple in a slightly bigger home on a corner lot in Coral Gables Fl., again, about $7000, to the municipality every year.
Throw in some decent health insurance on top of that....
Look, I'm not here to debate the pros and cons of each country, there of lots of each on both sides. I'm Canadian and always will be, but, I'll likely settle in the north end of Miami beach one day.
All I'm saying is be careful what you wish for, Obama has an new health care agenda, two wars, bank and automaker bailouts to pay for...and no money to do it with.

I would love to move south one day, just to get away from snow. I could go to Florida and buy a house for $90,000 that was selling a few years ago for $300.
With the cost of living difference and lower pay I'm sure you would come out about the same, just warmer weather.

Don't get me wrong I love Canada and never want to leave but if the right job came along and I never had to see snow again I don't think I would hesitate.
