Blonde 5` 11`` 115lbs Blue eyes flight instructor for hire!!

Post by Hal Johnson »

OK, now that I`ve got your attention :D

If you are a flight instructor please provide what you make and what type of benefits you get.

Info required for new training school opening in Canada.

Yes I know I`m idiot for not useing the search fuction! Yes I`ve seen the fourms on this subject but they always loose their objective after the tenth response.

Please provide the following:

- What you make per flight hour
- What you make for a base salary (If you make one)
- What hours do you work ( actual hours you are at work )
- How many hours do you average a month
- How many days off a week do you get
- What type of senority do you get
- What do you get paid for ground school
- What perks do you get with your school

Thank you for your responses, please try to keep your answers to the requested items above. We`re not looking for any stories of how good or bad your place of work is (Do not provide any company names!!!!). We`re not trying to start a bashing thread or a praising one; were just looking for some facts.

Thank you

- What you make per flight hour? below poverty
- What you make for a base salary? see above
- What hours do you work? An amount that can be deemed illegal it all depends on the weather an time of year but would say from when the students start to whenever the students stop.
- How many hours do you average a month? well if I have to be there 12+hrs a day seven days a week...
- How many days off a week do you get? Whats that?
- What type of senority do you get? Senority? If the boss like someone else better...
- What do you get paid for ground school? See one and two
- What perks do you get with your school? The perk would be having a job

Hey mods, you guys delete and move topics on a whim, how about deleting one that makes flight instructors suicidal?

The worse part of this is its pretty well true for most... From when I instructed 4 ago.

What you make per flight hour? $20 (Class 3)
- What you make for a base salary? Zero
- What hours do you work? 6 Days a week, average 10 hours a day, some days would be well over that though
- How many hours do you average a month? Summer 100+, Winter 40ish
- How many days off a week do you get? 1 day, depending on weather and if I could afford it
- What type of senority do you get? It was respected
- What do you get paid for ground school? Can't remember, less than the flying rate
- What perks do you get with your school? Discount on rentals, $20 an hour off I think...

That is a very very misleading title and I'm very disappointed. One of the instructor I know also had base salary taken away and placed strictly on flying hour only wage. Outside of NA, you may find an instructor job with base salary still (another instructor I know moved the South Asia).

Back in the day, I was on salary. I did the math, and I would have made more money if I'd been paid an hourly rate.
However, I never had to milk students or draw out briefing to make rent. Somehow, it never works in your favour.

I was dirt poor, no car, barely enough to eat, and yet they were some of the best times. Somehow there was always enough for a bottle of something.

I would hate to be older/established with a family and instructing today. My heart goes out to those who do.

Remember discarded pizza boxes are a great source of cheese.

- What you make per flight hour Class 4 was 21 Class 3 is 26.50
- What you make for a base salary (If you make one) This would be a very nice bonus come winter.
- What hours do you work ( actual hours you are at work ) Show up around 8 will work usually till at least 1800 but sometimes work till 2000. When I do a night flight I will sleep in and not show up till 1000-1200.
- How many hours do you average a month 100
- How many days off a week do you get I don't take them. I work 7 days a week, then once a month I go away for a few days. Either go home, go to hawaii or something along those lines.
- What type of senority do you get It does not change to much. Most of the instructors don't have Multi IFR's and well it hardly ever flies, so there does not appear to be much of carrot to chase.
- What do you get paid for ground school We don't teach ground school. It is done either by one guy who has lost his medical or done online. PGI's are 14 an hour and a sim is our flight rate.
- What perks do you get with your school $25 dollars off flight rentals. I get to do about 75% of my instructing on Citabria's which is way better then your typical C152 instructing gig. If accommodations are open and the instructor is from out of town they will let you stay there for free. Free sim rental for instructor (keeps the IFR current).

Overall I love instructing, but can not make a living out of it - so as soon as I get a good gig elsewhere I am going to move on, which is too bad as I feel I put in alot more then some of my peers.

Only instruct freelance now, and only with students I like.
$40/hr for regular stuff ( tailwheel, basic aerobatics, IFR and Instructor)
60$/hr for specialty flying (warbird checkouts)

Flight instruction cannot provide a half-decent family-wage, period. this is a young person game as a stepping-stone to something better. You either have to be young and unnattached, or retired and twice-detached.
i'm an instructor, i'm married, my wife is doing her masters. i make enough money that i can support my wife (who has to live 2.5 hrs away for school), cover the costs of commuting, do fun things on weekends, and live a good life in general. i work 5 days/week, although if it was a slow week i will sometimes go in for a 1/2 day on one of my days off.
