Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
After reading the other post about run-ups and reading a few responses I'd like to hear what our expert aviaries in here have to say.
Pilots who tie up common freq with position reports every 30 seconds.
I also happen to fly in a huge flight training area, and don't particularly care that your doing "private pilot maneuvers." Conversely, a position report can be a beautiful thing.
I fly banners at 500' and 35mph. I'm slow and very un-maneuverable, so much so that the FAR's has a special rule for me. Stay the hell away from me.
And, just because I go VFR into class B, doesn't mean you should.
Tell me Avcanada, what pisses you off?

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
Attended a couple of fly-ins this summer - got to experience this firsthand:
1.) Please don't tun inside of me in the circuit - I know you have a radio, I heard you talk on it, please listen to it, you cut me off when I was on final (perhaps if you looked outside it would help too). Happened twice within 5 minutes - yay - get to go around again!
2.) Please don't start backtracking for takeoff when I'm on final - can't you wait the extra minute 'till I'm down and clear? Let's go around again! This is fun!
Maybe I'm to picky

It's very unlikely that the problem is on the ATS end, so check your volume, check your headset, check the plug in, check you have the correct channel selector, check your frequency again, then do it again...

Having a standard that pilots lose their licence after making a mistake despite doing no harm to aircraft or passengers means soon you needn't worry about a pilot surplus or pilots offering to fly for free. Where do you get your experience from?
Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
Pilots turning on their Strobe Lights at night when they are taxing. Very Very unprofessional.
Turn them on ONLY when you're on the ACTIVE runway!!!

You should be reading your landing clearance back. I have seen it before where a student (did not speak english well if at all) only read back his call sign on a low approach clearance, and landed on the runway with another person and their vehicle already on it. If they had just read back their clearance it would have been fine.
Another pet peeve of mine is people who go to unfamiliar airports and don't familiarize themselves with the airports rules (such as noise abatement...etc), which I have been guilty of once or twice..
Another one is the dumb pilots who don't broadcast themselves on the radio and end up almost hitting me in the practice area because I've got no clue they are there.
I think though, an all time fav is the stupid passengers who think they know better than the pilot. "What the frick is the pilot doing! He's going the wrong way! I think I should pull the flight attendants aside and mention this to them, and after the flight I'll stick my large obnoxious head in the cockpit and tell the pilots they went the wrong way." When we're really just doing a full procedure approach.

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
My pet peeve is not using the elevator properly when taxying and running up a single engine light aircraft.
Plonking the nosewheel on landing is another... The elevator is there for the protection of the nosewheel, and the propeller!
If good habits are taught in the beginning, pilots find it easy to learn to fly tailwheel aeroplanes later.
Bad habits mean I can never be sure of you in a tailwheel aeroplane even after you have successfully checked out.
What is wrong with the habits taught 50, 60, 70, or even 80 years ago?
OOPS here's another one:
"Another one is the dumb pilots who don't broadcast themselves on the radio and end up almost hitting me in the practice area because I've got no clue they are there."
Pilots who do not keep a good look out when flying in areas where there's a lot of traffic such as practice areas.
Never never rely solely on the radio for traffic avoidance, most pilots do not know where they are and give inaccurate position reports in any case!

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
After some thought on this I have decided my pet peeve is pilots who do not or can not line up on the center line after turning final and do not land on the center line.
If they are that careless or inept in one of the most critical phases of flight how can they be any different in the rest of their flying?
My second peeve is:
Some of these careless or inept pilots think they deserve to be called...... " Professionals "

The most difficult thing about flying is knowing when to say no.
After over a half a century of flying I can not remember even one trip that I refused to do that resulted in someone getting killed because of my decision not to fly.

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
1) Opening up a landfill in an aircraft
2) Not cleaning the aircraft when you are done with it (massive ammount of mosquitos/ large bugs on the windscreen really pisses me off when I can't get them off 24 hours later)
3) Leaving the oil below the min. safe quantity/ over filling the oil consistently so it pukes out the breather tube and I end up cleaning it.
4) The strobe at night is retarted and makes me EXTREMELY annoyed.
5)Leaving straps in a tangled rats nest/ not lubing said straps when they are unable to cinch up.
6) Leaving moose blood in the aircraft
7) Coming onto the ramp with your landing light/strobe lights on to blind said marshaller.
Writing Nav light U/s in the journey log when I'm going day VFR.
I'm having fun here.. I want to continue.. but I think my point has been made.

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
People reading back EVERY SINGLE WORD that ATC tells them! If you are required to say every word that ATC says, then say it, otherwise, don't (unless you aren't sure of what's been told you, but then "Say again" might be a better phrase). (@Randleman: If the student who landed when they were supposed to do a low approach, did so because he/she couldn't understand the clearance, then I think that it's a languuage problem, not a readback problem... though I admit that the tower would likely have caught and corrected it. However, it shouldn't have happened at all if they had understood the language)
People rambling on the radio because they didn't think about what they were going to say before they said it (or making position reports every 30 seconds). ABC is ahhhh, over, ahhh, (insert place), at ahhh, 2000ft, ahhh, blah, blah, blah, any conflicting contact ABC on 123.4. You're not Quagmire, and this isn't Family Guy. Tell 'em who you are, where you are, what you're doing, and shut up. If no one talks to you, then there's probably nobody out there (That does NOT relieve you of your look out).
Night time, if you're holding short of a runway, turn off your landing/taxi/strobe lights. They aren't necessary. If you are taxiing past another aircraft at night, turn off the taxi/strobes. They are very blinding (especially the strobes), and night vision is useful at night!
Turning base from downwind 3-4NM from the runway when they are #1 in the circuit. One good reason (among others) why we stay about 1NM from the runway on the downwind is so that you have a decent chance of gliding to the runway and safely landing should your engine decide to call it quits. If that's one reason to stay a bit closer in the downwind, why screw yourself over by turning base so far away?
@light chop: If someone is backtracking while you're on final (so long as they can't take off in time) or cutting in front of you, that's not just an airmanship issue, that's a violation of CAR 602.19
Anyway, I'm going to stop before I get really cranky...

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
Whats wrong with including the runway# with the landing clearance readback?
As far as frequency congestion goes, it will hardly add an extra 0.5s. Considering the implications of the clearance I believe its well worth it. I like doing it, but I wouldn't say its a pet peeve (definitely not a lack of airmanship) when others don't. Yes, I'm aware of RAC 4.4.3, but I don't interpret it as saying: shall respond only with ABC.
Including the runway # is just an extra check (both for me and ATC). Landing on the wrong runway would be just as hazardous as not holding short (or holding short of the wrong runway). And nobody would argue with a full hold short readback. Granted its mandatory, but why not also the landing clearance?

Re: Pet peeves / lack of airmanship
Sure, man, scoff if you like, but you're missing the point: you add the runway number call to the guy who's making a full readback of his VFR departure to the girl who's reading back her full taxi clearance to the guy who's reading back the entire ATIS to... get the picture? Ever wonder why it is we have an ATIS, clearance delivery, ground, inner, outer, departure, and center frequencies? Been around long enough to see a reasonable airport with one, maybe two frequencies degenerate into one with 5? The reason is frequency congestion. I tell ALL my pilots that their goal when they push the x-mit button is to convey the most information with the fewest number of words possible. Read back more than what's required (be it regulatory or operational), and you sound amateur. I still catch myself doing it at times and it pisses me off!!

my pet peeves
-people with float/ski time asking me and everybody else "what the winds are doing down there"
-people who park uphill AND downwind
-metros that taxi in circles ON THE RUNWAY to cool down because somebody took their pad (whines), and then getting glared at from COJo as they're spinning the prop after shutdown.
-getting my long rope stolen...twice
does that count as airmanship? i don't know
-getting to work and there's no coffee
uh, that'll do.
