Becoming an Apprentice
Im possible thinking of becoming a apprentice aircraft technician(is that the correct term??) If I was too obtain a apprenticeship in the southwestern ontario region, where would I attend schooling when that section of my apprenticeship comes along. It is my understanding that I can do block courses of 2 month terms?? Where would I complete these and what are the other options(I cannot go to college full time) Any info would be appreciated
Re: Becoming an Apprentice
The only way you will be able to become an apprentice is to find an employer willing to take you on. Given that you are not willing to go to school full time and then find employment, it is likely that you employer will not be willing to pay you much for your services. You will have to take a correspondence course from ICS, Thompson or what ever their name is this month to get training. Once you have completed your apprenticeship it is likely you will be working godforsaken shifts for less than half what you should be earning all for the privilege of working in the aviation industry. If you want good advice - Choose another trade. By the way our trade is Aircraft Maintenance Engineer. If you want to be a technician go to the states where the requirements are lower.

Re: Becoming an Apprentice
Find a school that has a AME course. I think there is one in Thunder Bay, I don't know the name. If you want a more "traditional apprenticeship" Stevenson in Manitoba. But as stated before its pretty tough to land a job with no school or previous experience, unless you get a ramp job and transfer. I work at Westjet now and a few of the AME's were TAC or Airservice before they got into maintenance. Good luck.
Re: Becoming an Apprentice
Stevenson Aviation (now owned by Red River College) in Southport, MB has an apprenticeship program: 9 weeks of school each year, paid for (or heavily subsidized by) various levels of government, plus you can collect EI while in school. However, you need a job as an apprentice before you can attend.
That said, unless you really love airplanes: if you have a trade already, you're probably making more than you ever could in the aviation industry.
