5 years in Canada to work ground crew?
I had an interview with a ground ops company and was told TC wouldn't let me work because I haven't been in Canada for 5 years (I guess being from the UK is too much of a risk). Does anyone know if this is just for international airports, all customs aerodromes, everywhere?
Also does anyone have any views on how this would effect me trying to be a flight dispatcher?
Thanks

The only thing I can think of is a RAIC pass wants 5 years of history, with you having a number of years of non Canadian addresses they would have to go to the UK government for the background check taking a hideously long time. This could cause problems having use only an escort pass.

Company hired 4 people from overseas during the boom. Real pain in the ass to get a red pass (about 1 year and lots of paper work) but no problems with having them work at YYC while they waited for CATSA to get off their a**'s.

The airport authority here at Mysteryville said there was a six month backlog for RENEWALS for those of us who already had one. Can imagine the year wait or more is for real for new RAICs.

When I chucked bags at YVR many moons ago their where a few guys from India and Pakistan with the "Escort Required" passes, it wasn't a big deal just have to be working with someone who has the Red pass. Some of those guys had been working like that for 2+ years. You where limited that you couldn't do a job like towing cans to the bag rooms by yourself but in the bag room no worries you just had to be paired with a red pass worker.
Not sure if it's changed, but for that wage you got a lot of fresh off the boat people working their who definitely where not in the country for 5 years.

It depends where you were when you were outside of Canada. On of the major things that has to be doen for a security clearance is a criminal record check, so the first stop for your red pass application is a branch of the Attorney General's office where your Canadian records are checked. From there it gets passed to CSIS, CSIS then passes it to their counterparts in whatever nation you were in. Herein lay the problem. Not all nations will respond to such requests (South Africa and Japan come to mind off the top of my head). Others are really slow, some are not to bad at all. Getting a response from the UK was not much of a problem back when I had to deal with this sort of stuff. Either way, your application will be stalled until the other nation provides a criminal record check on you.

And what happens if you were outside Canada for a couple of weeks, a couple of times vacationing in the last 5 years ?? Will they try to check with these countries or deny your RP because you went on a vacation over seas?? I mean who does not leave the country a few times every few years ?!!!

It only applies to countries you have visited for more than 90 days.Dyski wrote:And what happens if you were outside Canada for a couple of weeks, a couple of times vacationing in the last 5 years ?? I sure as hell don't go on 90 day vacations...

3dflow, just curious as I am also from the UK: are you a permenant resident? If so shouldn't you have the same rights as a Canadian to any job? (assuming it doesn't specify citizenship). With all the discrimination laws I wouldn't have thought they could get away with it.
