Believe it was a Citabria that wound up crashing near Keremeos. He was having engine problems and jettisoned the door and several 'packages' before crashing.

If this is the guy I think he is, he has two prior convictions for drug smuggling. His first was for swimming the Rio Grande from Mx to the US with a backpack full of dope. Second was for flying dope from YNJ into the US, and cocaine back using an RV4 he owned. He ran that operation for several years and made millions before he got caught. Pretty much everthing he had was seized and sold as proceeds of crime, including the RV and a hanger he had purchased at YXX, cash, big house, cars, boats, motorcyles, etc. That operation was part of an HA dope smuggling cell. I beleive he was also on the Canadian swimming team at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico.

This guy had an RV4, white with blue stripes and a dark grey canopy that was orginally built by someone else from Surrey. I bid on it at auction, but wasn't successful. I think it went stateside.

No kidding!

...Washington must take serious note that the response to the New York Times report has come from none other than the Afghan Minister of Counter-Narcotics, General Khodaidad Khodaidad. The minister has brought into public debate Afghanistan's best-kept secret: the role of foreign troops in drug trafficking.

It was one thing to be dismissive when the former director general of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), General Hamil Gul, alleged that American military aircraft were being used for drug trafficking in Afghanistan. It might also have been expedient to simply ignore the issue when well-informed Russian sources made media comments that US troops were doing roaring business in drug trafficking in Afghanistan running into hundreds of millions of dollars. But Khodaidad is a highly trained professional who knows what he is talking about.

The Indians know him, and so do the Russians. Khodaidad passed out from the prestigious Indian Military Academy in Dehra Dun and was a product of the famous Fronze Military Academy in Moscow. He had a proven record in the communist government in Kabul as a highly decorated general; he led crack paratrooper brigades in the war in the early 1980s and he served as the army commander in the crucial Kunduz and Takhar frontline facing Ahmad Shah Massoud of the Northern Alliance. Britain, where he lived in exile for a decade, knows him too.

Therefore, when Khodaidad said on Sunday that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) contingents from the US, Britain and Canada are "taxing" the production of opium in the regions under their control, he carried a stern warning on behalf of Karazi. It is a simple, direct message: don't throw stones while sitting in a glass cage. ...

US goofs the Afghan election

November 2 - Abdullah Abdullah's refusal to take part in the Afghan presidential election runoff on November 7 is a watershed event. From his point of view, the former foreign minister did the sensible thing, having carefully assessed he had no stake whatsoever in a runoff that he had zero chance of winning. (Asia Times)

Tids,

Did you know the kid involved?

Not sure how to feel abut this? The right knee jerks and says "too bad, you knew the risks and got caught, and then compounded your errors by offing yourself" and the left knee jerks to think about his parents, and the silly drug laws we have at present...

Northy,

Sadly, I know more than you, Linden McIntyre, or the DEA could imagine about this story.

I happen to be with your right knee. I grew pretty tired of working incredibly hard, long hours, in a legitimate business, just to see "others" driving a new truck every fall with a couple of new sleds in the back. The culture figured highly in our decision to fold a winning hand in Nelson.

I don't know if you can have an entire career in this business, in this province, without being propositioned at least once: The industry is just too big to be avoided completely. The decision you ultimately make, in this regard, is one you'd better be prepared to 'own'. I sleep well at night.

He was one hell of a mountain biker, though, I'll give him that...

I can see how this type of thing would be tempting. I was asked once to "make a flight" for a good amount of money. I'm not sure if the guy was joking or not, but if you "make a flight", you're in their world at that point, and I highly doubt they will let you get out. That's why I said no.

Just hang in there, life will work itself out, and from everyone I've talked to that has been incarcerated, you do NOT want to do any time- especially in an American prison. :orcass: :smt027

(Toronto, Ontario-Thursday December 17, 2009) - Following a lengthy investigation, the RCMP led Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU GTA) which includes officers from the RCMP, Toronto Police Service, Peel Regional Police, York Regional Police, Durham Regional Police and OPP with the assistance of Halton Regional Police, Canada Border Services Agency and U.S Law Enforcements Agencies arrested 7 individuals for their involvement in a group that was transporting large amounts of ecstasy and marihuana from the GTA area to the United States.

This investigation revealed that the group utilized small aircraft to make several flights from Canada to Michigan, U.S. delivering large amounts of ecstasy and marihuana to many small airfields in the area.

During one flight in November of 2009, the group is alleged to have delivered approximately 100 pounds of marihuana and 300 pounds of ecstasy by aircraft to Sandusky, Michigan. Agents with the Drug Enforcement Agency in Detroit arrested two individuals in Sandusky, Michigan, while in the process of picking up the drugs after they were delivered.

Charged with Exporting Marihuana and Ecstasy are Vullnet Zeneli (age 33), Edon Shabani (age 37), Gezim Prifti (age 28) of Richmond Hill, Jeffrey Lee (age 33), Arben Krasnica (age 33) of Toronto, Arben Pepa (age 31) of Oakville and Shawn LeCours (age 26) of Kapuskasing, Ontario.

Canada and the U.S. law enforcement recognize that the trafficking of drugs across our borders is a shared problem, with illicit smuggling going both ways. Success in intelligence-led policing depends on our willingness to work with law enforcement, security agencies, colleagues in the criminal justice system and other stakeholders in the United States.

“This investigation is a prime example of the manner in which police agencies within Canada and the United States work together to combat organize crime involved in the cross border drug trade” stated Superintendent Mark Fleming of CFSEU GTA.

The investigation continues and additional charges may be pending.

Drug running is never a good idea, sooner or later you will get caught.

Wow, I find it a bit disheartening, not surprising, but disheartening, to see the CBC portraying this in a manner that is supposed to make you feel sorry for Sam and place the blame on the "system" and a law that "scared him to death".

Whether a person thinks laws are silly or not, they are the law and until they get changed, breaking them and getting caught carries consequences. There are ways to get laws changed, but ignoring or flaunting them isn't a very intelligent or successful way. He knew he was breaking the law and went ahead and did it anyway - repeatedly.

Although I'm sure it's very sad for his family, I was truly amazed to see the writers trying to place the blame for it on the drug-running middlemen who missed the significance of the silent cell phone. My god, the guy actually flying the drugs (repeatedly) is a poor innocent thrill-seeking kid while his contacts (whom he willing dealt with) are the bad guys for not keeping ahead of the police and calling off the trip. Where does this kind of reasoning come from?

And finally - yeah I'm sure he "stole" his good friend's helicopter. Sheesh!

It's almost as though it was written as a parody of permissive, anything goes, thinking but that certainly isn't CBC's style or mandate.

Just out of curiosity, how much money is being thrown at these guys that they're willing to risk so much? (By asking I can honestly answer "yes" on my EI claim when they ask if I've been actively seeking employment.)

I feel sorrow only for the family and those inocent people woho's lives were destroyed or effected . All who smoke dope have blood on their joint .All those who do coke or meth have blood on their hands and you can not shake that reality or responsibility. 6290 people are killed in Mexico last year alone and that is 6 x the standard definition of a civil war. Executions , beheadings and rapes are an every day multiple time occurance . So a pilot who trys to get rich quick is a murder is not a pilot but a murderer drug dealer . Kootney boy took the easy way out and was a spoiled boy in a man's world. He would not have survived much longer anyway . :|

Fair enough.

Would you like me to tell you about the Congolese blood that's attached to your computer and television? Or maybe the clothes you're wearing, or the sports equipment you use? Perhaps the bananas you buy at the grocery store? Maybe the car you're driving?

There is blood attached to everything we use, that unfortunately, is the way the world works. However strongly you feel about the drug trade and its indiscretions, you can take just about every product you use and apply the same logic. A week and a half ago I was walking through the rubble of what was a sweat shop in Port-au-Prince, it manufactured baseball equipment for a major company before it fell down...

I think the tragic suicide of this very promising young Canadian is about as sad as it gets.

It isn't the pot smokers who have blood, it is the spineless Canadians that are too afraid to do anything to change our fighting of America's drugs policies. These were not our policies, or our war - but we've bent over far too many times for America and continue to do whatever they dictate.

It is the inability of us as a people, to appreciate how dumb we are, and the a lack of back bone to do anything about it.

When the last of the 'Greatest Generation' die off, which I am a part of, the drug war will be long over, and like alcohol prohibition - for our future Canadians to come - will look back at one sentence on the Internet - 'America's Drug War' - and they'll shake their heads at how foolish we are.

This young Canadian's death is the 'effect', so we can shoot people, jail people, belittle people - but as long as a dollars worth of heroin in Afghanistan is worth 1K in Vancouver - we are going to have a problem.

It wasn't the weakness of this young man, or 'took the easy way out', to be sitting in an American jail cell, thinking your life is over, with all the fear and despair of both his surroundings and future - and his future was a zillion times brighter that the piece of XXXX at Trenton - who'll get better treatment and a better life than this scared kid did - over weed. Give me a break.
