Scary situations.
Hey guys,
I am posting this on the advice of another member that PM'd, and I agree it would be interesting how everyone has scared themselves enough to smarten up.
For me, it was when I had about 600 hours, I was in a 172 on floats, loaded up taxied out took a look back down the lake and figured oh, plenty of room. So started the turn mashed on the throttle goter on the step, through 20-40-60 knots and airbourne, but wait it will not climb for anything, it was like there was a 2000 pound weight holding the plane down, so I was doing everything possible to get this thing in the air adding flaps, removing them, anything. now luckily there was a river that ran parrellel to the lake I was taking off cause after clearing the trees by about 5 feet on this lake I managed to get the plane down and follow this river to get my speed that I lost off and finally got it to climb.
Now if this river wasn't there I was done, I would have wasted a perfectly good aircraft as well as my passengers.
Now, That was the one time that I scared myself so much that I thought I was dead, but I had the attitude of I'll get it to fly, then there was no oh it won't climb land on the water remaining, I was so determined to get it to climb that I didn't think straight. Now I am captain on a navajo and there is no go if I am not 100% sure that the aircraft can do it, and do it legally.
So the point of my story is. Don't think you know, be positive you know
I thought I had enough room, I was wrong, now I don't go unless I absolutely know, and I haven't had even a close call now.
cheers

Flew into a forest fire in 2003. 1500' doing fire patrol in bad visibility....all of a sudden we were in it. It took 2 of us to control the plane, poured the power to it and turned and got out of there and climbed up to 9000' where the visibility was clear. Needless to say that is the last flight we did that day...we called it quits and went for a beer.
I definitely have a new found respect for all the people working fires in the summer......

after a full season of days flying floats, took a single engine piston wheel plane up, ferrying it to southern ON.
At night. Filed IFR just in case.
TAF said it should pick up. It didn't, got worse. Way worse.
Got into cloud due to MOCA, light icing, at night, IFR valid but so very, very rusty... almost at the 2 year mark of not using it!
AC was IFR, but no de-ice.
I just flew the Airplane and monitored the performance. Oh, and talked to myself alot.
Never happier to see the YQT runway melt into sight in my life. Beer was so very sweet after that.
The key is to learn, learn and never forget what you've learnt. I learnt something about respecting the limits of a 20 year old 150 HP flying truck, amongst other things. Made it through the float season with only a few minor surface wounds and one pair of soiled pants, then nearly made headlines 3 days later. It's always when you least expect it.

As a student on the 300nm XC.
Sitting in the back of the plane. Flying through a valley with ceilings near the top - daylight fading. Wall of cloud ahead - buddy doesn't think he has enough room to turn around...there was lots of room. Flies us into cloud, stalls the plane, and 1/2 of a rotation...right out of the cloud - and less than 250' off the deck. Kissed the ground and proposed to my now-wife as soon as I got back.
The funny thing about sitting in the back seat is that no matter how much you yell the controls won't move if the guy up front freezes.

hazatude... wtf man...change yer fukin avatar already...if I see Farley rub his left nipple one more time I'm gonna be scarred for life... is it the fact of a man feeling himself in a public forum that gets you goin or the fact that you are forcing the rest of us to watch? If it's just cause he "most resembles the celebrity that you are confused for most often" then my condolences.. try the " South Beach"
