Met an old friend again.

Post by Cat Driver »

For those of you who think I am anti Transport Canada just thought I would share a very special two days I spent talking to one of T.C.'s inspectors now retired.

Was taking the wings off the Mong Sport I bought to trailer it home from Delta Airpark when Heinz Bold showed up and was as surprised to see me as I was to see him.

It was a real pleasure to see him again and talk about how things were in the industry so many years ago.

What was even more pleasant was talking about all the other TC inspectors who were with TC in those days and findng out where they are now and how they are doing. For sure the Pacific Region had some of the best T.C. people I ever worked with back in those days.

Anyhow just thought I would share that with everyone here because I was truly happy to see him again and talk about old times. :smt040

.,

The Mong is going to make a great, economical little plane for someone once you sell it.

Yes Aerobat my wife can't believe I would canabalize such a beautiful airplane.

However as soon as I get the engine, cowling and the prop off it I am going to sell the rest of the airframe as a project for someone to put back in the air.

It is in fantastic shape so I have to sell it before I get to attached to it. :smt040

Godscrazy, if you read my posts you will soon figure out I am and always have been pro T.C., it is the few who abuse the power of the office they hold that I detest.

You will also note that I name them and can back my allegations up with documentation that is bullet proof.....that is why Joe never has my posts exposing them removed because he has seen the documentation as has widow. :smt040

Holy crap Cat. You lucky bugger. You met a legend. He was one of my hero's when I started with the "Company" in 1981.

Heinz was one of my all time favourite guys in TC.

I'll never forget the day when Heinz sat with a bunch of us TC types in about 1998 or so and said "IF Toronto wants it let's vote no".

He was one of the very few (which, by the way included me) that saw through the lunacy of the bureaucratic bullshit that TC forced on private aviation.

CAR 604 government guys that threw some of us other guys into the Commercial and Business Aviation Section that forced us off the so called "gravy train' are now gone. May our memories and efforts rest in peace

I was only with the "Company" for 29 years .. I guess that still makes me a spring chicken, unlike Heinz.

Yes Check Pilot you and I were fortunate to have worked with people like Heinz and many like him.

I am sure you understand how much it meant to me to have part of two days talking to him and remembering a time when we all were friends and who you worked for mattered not.

I feel sorry for the new people just entering aviation because it has changed forever and has lost a lot of the " FUN " factor.

I was surprised to find out that Heinz was part of the T.C. team that was responsible for approving the operation of that Cat I was flying in Africa and Europe and South America during those filming contracts.....He was really interested in the crossing of the south Atlantic as he was aware of how heavy we were on take off out of Dakar.

That was a long day, airborne at sunrise and landed just as the sun was going down and we were flying with the sun.....

Told him I was glad to have had the experience but would not do it again.

Heinz is a class act.

Didn't know him in TC, but knew him *as* TC for many years.

Certainly made some waves... good for him.

It's strange how many of us can have good relationships with TC personnel yet there is always the "stinger" that there are some bad people there. If they are so few, how come they cannot be singled out and removed, since we all know about them?

Also, can someone enlighten me on the "changes that have taken place at the top and some people are gone." Does rumour say the new DG is a good guy? Thanks.

Big +1.

He came along on a couple of my citation checkrides in the past, usually monitoring P.S. It was always a real pleasure going out for dinner with him afterwards and hearing the "war stories" from both P.S. and Heinz.

Hey Cat how come you dissasembled the Mong to take it back to CD? I rebuilt it for the last owner, and after we put a bigger rudder and locking tail wheel on it, it was a lot less challenging to fly. With the open cockpit and all it could have been an interesting flight home.

I certainly do agree with you that the by gone days of aviation were a lot more fun.

I did not fly it over for several reasons.

The main reason was I had to take it apart when it got to Nanaimo and with the weather the way it is in this area I figured it was easier to just take it apart in the hangar it was in and trailer it home.

As to how easy or hard it is to fly that never crossed my mind, but freezing my ass of flying it did. You have a point about flying open cockpit airplanes, they are nice...in the summer.

Living over here on the Island has its drawbacks because of the time it takes to get back and forth to the mainland, by trailering it home I was under no weather concerns......and it is where I want it, it is right here at home all in pieces in my workshop so I do not have to rent space at the airport for it.

I keep thinking I should keep it and someday find a continental engine for it but I already have to many toys I never use.

By the way what do you think the airframe firewall back is worth when I try and sell it?

I was asked to fly the Mong over to the Island... 'Probably better it went on the trailer!

This morning I sat next to Heinz at the Delta breakfast...
He got into my bad books when he made not nice references to the SportStar when I was hooking up the battery for a recharge... But I have learned to tolerate this German!
