There are short (100 days) and long (130 days) contracts. Obviously the short term ones tend to go junior

Order of contract desirablity is generally as follows

1st BC (all long)
2nd Alberta (all long)
3rd Yukon (all short)
4th Alaska (all short)

A) There should be a billion questions you ask before getting to the pay bit.
B) This is a job you should want to get into for many reasons other than pay.
C) You are assuming bird dog is a the junior position.
D) $30,000.00 1st year give or take 5k. before extensions.

Will it rain all summer?
Will it be 35 and windy?
How much lightning will there be?
How careless will the public & industry be?
Will the fires require airtankers?
Will those airtankers be requested?
Will my group get exported elsewhere in Canada?
Will my group stay home to man the fort while everybody else gets exported?
Will the fires be close to the the base?
Will the fires be a long way away?
Will they occur in batches or in widely-spaced intervals?
Will political or budgetary concerns mean more or less flying?
Will there be a pilot swap to another jurisdiction mid-season?

After two decades in the business, I've learned that nothing is predictable and that one's fortunes are very much subject to the whim of the weather and other forces well beyond one's control. 'mattfoley' is right: there are a billion other questions before monetary compensation that you should seek answers to before taking the plunge. The 'glamorous' world of aerial fire suppression is the best job on the planet for some; the most mind-numbingly tedious way to earn a living for others.

I predict lots of fires this summer (unfortunately) as the snow base is very low and dry weather is being forecast.

Hope not, but it seems like it.
