Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
It appears that in the last couple of weeks I have noticed a fair amount of airplanes being forced to divert to YBW because YYC can't take them due to reduced system capacity? Is this going to continue until YYC gets there parallel runway put in? I can imagine that this is costing companies alot of money.

Re: Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
Dunno but there seems to be flow into YYC everyday and just yesterday there was a ground stop... IE no sced flights where allowed to push from their gates to head to YYC for a given period of time. I am not sure how long that lasted. Something needs to be done sooner than later. YYC's airspace is finite when feeding a single runway.

Re: Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
I know they struggle even on the clear days but yesterday the RVRs were below 2600 for most of the day. I imagine that puts a little dent on the arrival rate. One out of three runways good for 1/4mile/1200rvr ops. At least parking should be easy to find......
Re: Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
Ground stops affect all IFR traffic filed to arrive at the airport in question. You will usually find out when you contact clearance for your airways. I have had to wait it out in Dayton, OH for a longer lunch break due to a ground stop for KLGA.200hr Wonder wrote:<snip> there was a ground stop... Re: Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
Last few days RVR basically 1200-3000 range. Braking action Fair/Poor. We can only run single runway and we are 6-7 miles in trail. Acceptance rate is 24 arrivals an hour. Peak times the demand was calling for 30-40 in a one hour slot, so thats why the ground stop was in. Sorry folks, not much anyone can do in that weather sequence. And yes the parallel will help us, but its still 4 years away.

Funny how people start ragging, bitching, moaning and whining about things that are beyond thier control, namely the weather the last few days in YYC. Runways need cleared, de-icing, flow control and ground stops all because of this. You really think any department in aviation, whether ops, ATC, ground crews, flight crew, airport support staff, etc, etc etc wants to purposefully delay or divert flights unnecessarily? Let's think about this for just a few seconds for those of you untrained in aviation, weather is the one factor we cannot contol that causes delays. Also give the parallel rwy time to come, they realize the situation YYC has become, they are fixing it. If it takes another 10yrs to build, then complain. Till then, take it one day at at time. Mind you they have been talking additional rwy for several years now... Kind of makes you wonder where your parking and airport improvement $$$ are going?
Kowalski: Sir, we may be out of fuel.
Skipper: What makes you think that?
Kowalski: We've lost engine one, and engine two is no longer on fire.

Only heard 5-6 airplanes on arrival freq?... Not much til you realize arr2 is open and there are 5-6 on other freq landing on crossing runway. If you hold, there are enough planes ahead of you keeping the runways occupied. Period. We could occasionally let a couple more in but we're trying to avoid having 40 mile finals, that's all. That's my opinion. Kinda well placed to know what I'm talking about.

Personally I think I'd rather do a forty mile final than a hold; it at least gives you the illusion of progress.cyeg66 wrote:altiplano wrote:I've been given flow times/crossing times/holds going to into YYC on SKC days and found it pretty quiet once I was handed over to the terminal controller... Re: Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
I know quite a few of our aircraft have had to divert to springbank or preplan it because of duty issues and not getting a slot time reasonable enough to make it back to yyc before they duty out. That just sucks. I really hope they can get the parallel runway paved sooner rather than later.
As well is it just me or when the oil boom 2 years ago was happening didn't they seem to have more traffic going in and out than what they have now?

From our perspective, though, it's not always easy pairing up an arrival on 34 with the 'ghost' generated by the 28 arrival (as an example) when they're 40 miles from threshold. The wind and weather (turb, icing, etc)need to cooperate to facilitate our task. Fuelwise, you'd save a few quarts more doing a spin or two at FL200 than joining a localizer at 7000', 40 miles from the keys, and slowed to b/w 180 and 160 kts... Oh well, at least gas is cheap. Build the runway, already.
Look on the bright side. Saskatchewan is getting pounded by a blizzard and no delays are being felt. They asked for 200 nm spacing between subsequent arrivals into YQR and YXE but then they realized that's a normal arrival rate for there.

They have 200 nm spacing in Saskabush because they can; nobody goes there unless they have to.cyeg66 wrote:shitdisturber wrote: Personally I think I'd rather do a forty mile final than a hold; it at least gives you the illusion of progress.
True, true.

Re: Aircraft being diverted to Springbank
You got three runways already work em, any rumors about 25 getting an ILS? and how about publish some speeds on the arrivals other than 250 knots ties up the radio speed up slow down.........
