Rumors of AC hiring soon, any truth?

Rockie, how do you know that that is a fact? Are you feeding us a line or are you "in the know"?

I never feed anybody a line, if I don't know something I say so.

Last summer the decision was made that with some exceptions all training and project work would be done by contractors. A notice went out to the line guys asking them to put their name in, but it would mean flying a full block and coming in on their days off. I don't know how many they've gotten so far but I imagine there are a few severely underpaid EMJ FO's who are willing. There are also several retired guys doing it as has been the case on widebody fleets for years.

They have even advertised for managers from outside.

No hiring planned until the impact of the age 60 thing can be assessed once all the proceedings are complete. There would have been hiring in the fall otherwise.

It`s been confirmed AC is looking for people to join the training department.

Anyone have any solid...or fluid info on when they may be hiring? BSing with guys in the security line, I have heard after the Olympics, and early fall? Can anyone confirm or deny?

Yes, Air Canada needs Contract instructors. They have decided to "let go", "fire", "terminate", etc, the regular Air Canada pilot instructors (because they cost too much), and instead return them to regular line flying.

This doesn't mean they will be hiring any more pilots for the line. It only means that once again Air Canada is once again sacrificing safety in favour of additional profit for the share holders.

To Jetsetfly.

Maintenance will not be hiring in the near future. FYI, there is going to be a massive layoff coming up in AC for maintenance crew. Heavy maintenances have been done on almost every Airbus, 767, 777. And B checks are almost all finished on Embraers.

But that rumour of hiring pilots again soon could be true. Because maintenance is almost finished on all airplanes and those planes will be flying all summer long. Busy times are coming. So good luck to those people who are applying for Cabin Crew and Pilot positions. And good luck to all maintenance crew who'll be hitting the streets soon.


And heck no there isn't a layoff coming up in Jazz. Who's spreading that rumour!?

So back to the "memo" stating that there will be no hiring in 2010. Can someone rationalize how we are don't need to hire but at the same time all popular summer and Christmas vacation availability has been slashed?

There is a mentality in flight operations and training right now (actually only one person, but he swings the hammer) that costs must be slashed at the expense of all else. Dictates have come down that all training activities and any possible project work will be contracted out. I'm sure you've seen the memo asking line pilots to give up their days off and do the work AFI and projects pilots used to do for a fraction of the money as contractors.

I think the reduction in vacation slots is part of that plan as this airline pares itself down to the absolute bare minimum. Charter airlines operate with bare minimum crews all the time, but long-term sustainability isn't a consideration when they do that.

When training ramps up again as it invariably will, we will see how this grand experiment in contracted training deals with the pressure. I think will be a disaster.

You stated that you are in the bottom 500 so you were witness to the gong show that went on for initial training on the Embraer and that was with full-time, permanent AC people supplemented with contract people. New equipment combined with new faces with many snags along the way (not enough checkers after training) resulted in my course needing 5+ months from PIT to Line. If what you say is true, I shudder to think of the safety that will be compromised in the next hiring spree.

I think safety will be effected as well, but it will be as a result of reduced quality training and will take time to manifest itself. Continuity of instructors for anyone on course will become even more of a luxury than it is now. Training material quality will suffer badly as the rate they pay to produce it is embarrassingly low. The more people they have training who don't actually fly the airplane will also have an eventual effect since many questions will be met with a shrug (not their fault). People who fly the line but contract instruct as a sideline will be very difficult to schedule, will be increasingly unreliable as their line flying workload increases due to minimum crewing levels, and will probably suffer a high turnover as a result.

The emphasis in the sim building since I've been here has been on minimizing the cost of training...not providing the best training. They don't even like to have instructor meetings because of the cost. The money priority driving the training here will catch up to us in an unfortunate way at some point IMHO.

As a former technical instructor for maintenance whose department was destroyed by the same M.O. I believe the flight department is about to experience and experiment with a training regime whose sole goal, is meat in the seat. In maintenance we now learn on the job, so although we have years of experience bear with us and have some patience. We do the same as we see many pilots who can fly but often do not understand the machine. The cost of poor training is easily disguised in our operations whereas the cost of in house training departments stares management in the face. In my opinion once you get used to using BS as a resource its just justifies more BS.

Air Canada just had their regular cattle drives for F/As. You get interviewed and hired almost instantaneously.

Recruitment sessions a success. On February 13 & 14 in Montreal, and 21 & 22 in Toronto, Customer Service Training and IFS Recruitment held recruitment sessions to seek friendly and dynamic prospective Flight Attendants to join our award-winning Customer Service team.
