In uncontrolled airspace, IFR does not require a clearance. ATC cannot issue you one.

I am sure that both the pilots and aircraft were legal for IFR, they had current pubs on board, yadda yadda.

People down south don't understand uncontrolled IFR (in class G airspace).
But you still need to follow IFR rules, i.e. fly at even/odd thousand feet, 1000 feet above obstacles, etc. You can't just blunder into cloud on your VFR flight and call it 'uncontrolled IFR'. The fact that they didn't have any maps and they weren't sure if the GPS was navigating correctly made it look like VFR. At least, that is the impression the programme gave, but as I said perhaps it was just the editing.

why would you not use serviceable parts from a "spare" assy to keep an aircraft making money?

sigh, i dont often rant, but somedays i cannot hold back and stay diplomatic.

I think the AME's decision to remove the engine from the spare plane was eminently sensible. He mentioned something about a "quick engine change" module or assembly, so I take this to mean that option was the fastest, given that their spare module had parts missing. I suppose I can understand Joe being ticked off that his spare wasn't ready if it was supposed to be, but the solution that gets the plane back in the air by the next morning seems to be a good one. I've seen parts get robbed off one serviceable plane so another one can fly all the time, at lots of different airlines. It's a fair practice as long as the paperwork is done. And, the other aeroplane was clearly not airworthy to begin with, or they would have just used it instead of fixing the broken one. Adding one more snag to a grounded plane so the good one can fly seems like good sense to me, if you don't have parts sitting on the shelf. I agree with the poster above. ...'cept maybe I wouldn't have yelled.

Joe would save himseld a lot of anxiety if he wasn't a micromanager.

Why is he picking flight crew? Shouldn't the chief pilot be doing that?

If he would have let that Juan fix that engine the way he knew was best, there wouldn't have been any conflict.

Are you upset with parts being scavenged off the spare? Go talk to the DOM. I'm betting Rod knew this was happening but the organization was too cheap to replace the parts or no one ever got around to ordering replacements.

The only reason why Joe would need to step in is if is managers were screwing up. I've seen family run organizations before. Often, blame is put on others rather than admitting your family member is a screw-up.

Mircomanaging drives people away. People don't quit jobs. They quit managers.

At Juan's age and experience, that was epic. I cant imagine taking s***t in my 50's for something like that. If Juan was a tool I would be siding with Joe, but doesn't appear that way and he fixed the plane for the next day before he told Joe where to go. In my experience you dont see guys go that extra mile, what great moral.

cheers

I liked the part where the Chief Pilot helped the AME's get the engine swapped on the Electra! Now that's a first! Way to lead by example Arnie, very impressive.

Yep, that's the mark of a true professional. You're pissed enough at your company that you're going to quit, but you get the job done first. Well done!

There is nothing wrong with robbing parts to keep an aircraft servicable. It is a common practise that is practised throughout aviation. I have done this myself many times. This is something you do in a pinch. It is not something you should endorse nor accept as being a norm. To continually operate on a premise of repeatedly robbing other aircraft is a flawed system and inevitably it comes back to bite you in the ass. In a sense that is what I call disfunctional. I hope green engineers out there reading this realise there are limits in a playing this Peter to pay Paul game. What I find dispicable is shitting on the engineer who is struggling to keep your antiquated crap airworthy by doing what ever it takes. Juan, myself and many engineers across this country have faced this exact scenario unfold many times over and quite frankly its getting old.

Nope, but until recently I was trying to maintain an aircraft that was 65 years old and struggling to keep a stiff upper lip when faced with lack of spares, fiscal restraints and an ever dwindling crew of experienced fellow engineers.

There's nothing wrong with robbing Peter to pay Paul, but it should be remembered that eventually Peter is gonna run out of money and they'll both be broke.

As has been said already, its quite a standard procedure to "borrow" green tag parts from a good engine and replace them later. Small ops cant afford to keep 300 or 400 K in parts on the shelf all the time, and when your on the clock and losing money by the minute, you do what you have to in order to get the bird in the air! I really wonder how many of you have ANY idea what it takes to run an air service north of 60?.

As for Juan..He IS the dictionary meaning of the word "professional". He stayed til the job was done, didnt leave Joe holding his d*ck and got the job done BEFORE he walked. Class act and id hire this gentleman anytime!

I know another boss like Joe, his initials are SP and ALOT of people were GLAD to hear he retired last year. He made joe look like a pussy cat and the way he treated his engineers and called names..was pathetic and why I was pleased to tell him to shove his job DEEP up his a$$. Joe would be a cake walk compared to this piece of work.

Love the show! Keep it coming! Can anyone CONFIRM there will be a 2nd season?

Fly safe all.

If he was in a good mood that day. If not, the standard "stupid c***suc***" and a slap across the face in a local bar was more his speed. lol. Thats a TRUE story!

I had one of my AMEs come to me and tell me the next time SP called him a &^%&$%^&* , would be his last. That he would quit on the spot, jump a flight to YYC and knock the **&*^^%*^& out. Thing was, he was 6'3" 265 and much like Juan, didnt need to take his shit!

Lets just say im glad hes retired! If id have waited 3 lousy months, I could have said goodbye at his retirement party..instead I told him to jam his job up his a$$. That was more fun to be honest! 8)

It seems as though a great many of you believe everything you see on TV, and take it as a proper representation of what those people on screen are actually like. This is not true, and those of you who are simply taking my on-screen demeanor at face value should give your damn heads a shake. :goodman:

I am not a sexist. The camera crew would ask very specific questions, then edit my answers to make me say what they wanted. Oh, and by the way, until you have actually worked at Buffalo, dont assume I am wrong that girls get it a bit easier there than the guys. No there are not any quotas or anything that need to be filled, Joe just likes girls and Joe's word is the one that matters there.

I am not a whining little sh!t like they show me to be. Most of the things I am saying are a direct answer to a specific question that ends up being edited away, leaving just my words without any context to them.

Wilf and I get along great, always have, probably always will. The tension was created by the show..... Seeing a trend yet?

The moral of this story is: Before you pass judgement on me, stating that I have a crappy attitude, you would never hire me, etc etc, Maybe you ought to get to know me, maybe meet me in real life, rather than just smack talking about me in some stupid chat room where it seems my fate is decided.....

Now that that's out of the way, feel free to ask me to clarify anything in the show. Would be more than happy too help if I can.
Jeremy
