Re: iPhone apps
Did the search and grabbed a few - also got ForeFlight Mobile 3 (trial).
I did the Aviation search on the app store but there's so much out there hard to tell what's good what's not.

Re: iPhone apps
I've seen a VOR app that worked really well.

RFI
Based on the CRFI, but doesn't have the 'Discing/Reverse Thrust' numbers. A co-worker knows the authors, so hopfully they're adding it.
Gee Meter
Interesting to see how many G's it claims you're pulling.

Re: iPhone apps
AFAIK the iphone 3GS has a built in GPS and also gets location data the same way as earlier models - from cell tower relative signal strength and from a database it has of wifi MAC addresses (i.e. Media Access Control, AKA ethernet hardware address). In the absence of this extra information I imagine it could take a while to locate itself "cold" via GPS alone, but I haven't tested this.beaverbob wrote: Another question I have: Is the iphone GPS satilite based or only off the Cell towers?
Re: iPhone apps
The gps position is carried through the cel signal, need reception. It also can confuse itself often. I've found myself 1/2-1 mile away from my GPS position at times.
No good in the middle of nowhere if no cel towers are in range; however after spending a few days in Nowhere Alaska, I still get great reception. I'll thank Gov Parnell, but also Gov Palin for that.

Re: iPhone apps
I see no need for an iphone untill it includes a real GPS, otherwise, for me its just an expensive cell phone.

Re: iPhone apps
I don't think this is true. There is a real GPS in there. However, the map data all comes from the Internet which does need a cell or wifi connection, so it appears that the GPS doesn't work in the middle of nowhere.Nark wrote:The gps position is carried through the cel signal, need reception.
I just tested this by putting my iPhone 3GS into airplane mode and selected the compass application. It correctly showed my lat/long.
Re: iPhone apps
Fair enough, I have the 2nd gen one, not 3gs.
Expensive cell phone, yes.
Cheap computer, yes.
Its the greatest thing since sliced bread for me. I got a story to tell over beers about almost losing it, a liberal girl and New Years early morning. Perhaps in the fall when I come back down.
Cheers

Re: iPhone apps
That is true. Without a sat lock it can pinpoint your position by triangulating where you are between cell towers and give you a position within a Km or two. If you have a shot at the sky it will get you too within a few meters. If you look on your map in google maps it will show a big blue circle showing your general position until it gets a sat lock then it will go down to a specific point. We aren't talking about approach accuracy by any means but it is pretty much bang on the money.RVgrin wrote:I don't think this is true. There is a real GPS in there. Re: iPhone apps
iPhone 3G has a built in GPS - it works with whatever it can receive at the time, if it can get a view of the sky the GPS will work pretty much all the time and the accuracy is nuts - on Google Maps satellite view it will put you right in the proper driveway etc. most of the time. If it can't get the GPS it will use cell tower triangulation, if not that than the wifi - but it visually shows you the position's accuracy as a large circle in google maps if it's not on GPS.
