To the YWG guys

Post by ywgflyboy »

So, driving to work last week after checking the METAR VV001, RVR1400 etc and then tuning into the radio to hear the eye in the sky traffic report made be a little skeptical to say the least. Anyone with radar in Winnipeg actually want to confirm this lady is up there on ground based layer days reporting collisions? hah

the only person in YWG even worth talking to is Jerricho. the center guy's were probibly calling it that so they could have a nice peaceful nap (I realize you don't report the Wx but you can buy beer for those that do). keep the VFR out

If she really was up there with those reported conditions I think CJOB needs to have another look at their SMS procedures to make sure they are safeguarding the lives of not only their reporting crew but the civilians on the ground as well who might need to look out for aircraft that can't see where they are going.

Besides I always thought Barkley (I think that was his name) did a better job reporting from the ground.

Do you realize, that as an "IFR" controller, an "IFR" day means I'll be working harder? VFR weather means aircraft will cancel inbound to controlled airports, it mean automatic control transfer with the tower, it means no missed approaches or aircraft holding waiting for weather to improve, it means aircraft that normally fly VFR will stay that way and not check in for IFR clearances. Do you think providing flight following to a VFR aircraft is the hardest part of my job? Get real dude.

fly in and out of there with a ATC voice that's of a NZ accent on a busy IMC day than try it when there is no NZ accent and tell me if the extra 15 miles you fly does or dosen't bother you. Everyons doing their job, just some do it better

Hey guys,

Back when I was in radio, I did air traffic reporting for CJOB/Power 97 for a little bit while training IFR at YWG center.

It's really up to the helicporter pilot whether they fly or not. On IFR and even marginal VFR days, a lot of time they'll stay on the ground, and just use Barkley, online resources, and call-ins to get the traffic picture.

Don't tell anyone though. Don't want to ruin the magic

P.S.

The traffic reporter for CJOB/Power and the one for Bob/Q94 were in the same chopper and used the same report...

Ok, it doesn't bother me, at all. I don't care who your "favourite" terminal controller is. If you don't like controllers without "NZ accents" or all centre controllers period, I don't care. What I took issue with is you said that centre controllers, of which I'm one, bribe weather observers, with beer, into lying about the conditions so I could nap at work, because IFR weather is easier since there will be no VFR aircraft to wake me up. If you're going to bash me at least do it right. Something like "All centre guys bribe the weather man with beer for VFR weather so that they can have an easy day and nap." I won't agree with it, but at least it makes sense. And trying to cover up with "but I had to fly an extra 15 miles because Jerricho wasn't working, waah waah..." is lame, that's not issue you started earlier in the thread.

Sounds like we could use Jerricho in YYC term. Pilots would be happy, too, to save themselves 15+ miles on each of their 25 mile finals... Oh, and ywg-atc, don't sweat the small stuff. Some people like to talk thru their a$$e$, though to me it always sounds garbled...

Edit: though I do agree with the assertion that some are better at the job than others. No disputing that...

And if all pilots were equally all competent I wouldn't need to repeat stuff twice and then miss the turn to final on another aircraft resulting in extra mileage. Or if when a pilot is assigned a speed but obviously doesn't reduce or keep a speed or when you guys don't readback properly and when to fish for a proper readback using more and more transmissions. Goes both ways, tool.

I hope you're not saying I'm the 'tool' here....
Anyways, the non-compliance with speed control is the greatest obstacle and pain-in-the-ass to overcome. I imagine, however, that if you were to tell tower to make the perpetrator pull up and go around (and I'm referring to a specific few repeat offenders, here  ), the speed assigned all the way TO THE NDB would be adhered to the 2nd time around. Relevant only in IFR conditions, naturally.

Ok, just checking. It's not good to call your future instructor a 'tool', apparently  . (Didn't think I'd forget, did ya?)

Haha, you sure have a better memory than I. ''Comfirm I cleared you for the approach?'' is the most commong phrase in my phraseology that and '' Hold my beer, watch this''.

Just kidding, how's the staffing out over there?

The radio station that reported traffic from the air was actually on the ground, and have been reporting it that way for a few years.
A bit of history about Wpg's traffic reporting aircraft. There used to be 2 aircraft in the sky; Traffic 1 was CJOB's helicopter; which still flies to this day. There was another Cessna 172 (named "Traffic 2"---both flew out of St Andrews Tower) about 3-4 years ago, rented by CHUM radio to also broadcast traffic from the air over winnipeg. Traffic 2 last about 6 months, but they never really let the public know; so now when you hear a traffic report from the "eye in the sky", they are actually not flying, they are on the ground.

Traffic 1 did not fly in that fog the past couple of weeks. I believe they provide information and sell it to other radio stations looking for traffic info; hence the other radio stations "eye in the sky traffic reporting".
