Are you the guys that so far have 500 survey replies just alone in the GTA?! I heard someone talking about what you are doing the other day. Very interesting! Are you going to post the final results? There needs to be stricter English Testing for ESL students, that will eliminate alone over half the problems.

100000000% agreed with above

I'm surprise that CZBB controllers can understand what the guys say over the com half the time.

Are you surveying controllers as well?

And yes, please post the final results ... I think a lot of us on this site would be interested in seeing those results when they are finalized.
Cheers

The ESL problem is extremely serious, not only at CZBB but everywhere. The FTUs are bringing these people into the country with the idea that they can be understood in English...but that is false. The
English testing is done by unqualified people overseas who have a vested interest in getting their nationals trained as pilots.
Many of the schools hire these off-shore people after they go through the puppie mills and somehow get a Class 4 Instructors rating. They in turn are teaching their own nextgen students...IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE! Not English!
It is only a matter of time before someone gets killed by the lack of fluency in English.
Off-shore students must be fluent in English before starting their flight training otherwise the inevitable will happen.

Re: Communication discrepancies between ATC and pilots in GT
I think lack of discipline in proper standard phraseology is mostly at fault here. A certain English proficiency is obviously a requirement, but from flying around the world and talking to many ATCs and pilots, with many different and heavy accents, I rarely encountered "say again".
I find the most difficult to understand are the fairly young guys who think that speaking quickly with a lot of shortcuts is a sign of experience.
