Stranded Passenger # 2
O.K we went to YYZ terminal 1 and asked around, most of the stranded passengers had a back up plan, but we met a man from Lituania who was stuck in Toronto since Thursday....! He is flying with LOT and has nothing but his clothes and $100 to his name. We brought him back to our home, fed him, let him take a shower. He wants to go back to the offices of LOT at YYZ and see what type of compensation he is entitled to...??
What are his rights..? as he really doesn't want to infringe on us (even though we told him he is welcome)..
Thanks Mike.

Re: Stranded Passenger # 2
"Entitled" is a strong word. I'd say he may qualify for hotel only but it depends on what airline and how expensive a ticket he bought. The cheap seats generally come with no guarantees of any kind. 1st class may have a built in insurance policy of some kind. Gotta talk to the airline directly.
Other than that, try talking to Immigration Canada? There may be some short term bail out in place for stranded pax. Otherwise he's looking at soup kitchens, the red cross, or homeless shelters. Not a very nice situation at all. I'd imagine many canadians in Europe are in the same boat without a paddle.

Mike B,
Kudo's on the kindness. I don't think he's entitled to anything. Volcano's are an Act of God, and together with other types of weather, most airlines don't put you up.

Mike B.,
Good for you helping someone out like that!
However, I fail to see how the airline is responsible for Eurocontrols airspace closure. I guess if he bought trip interruption/cancellation insurance he will find himself OK. So long as he has some means of paying for what he needs until he can go home and submit the receipts for re-imbursement. I would be surprised if LOT automatically provided this coverage.
Hope all works out OK for him.

He should also check with his countries foreign affairs office. They often times can provide assistance in times of travel interruption. Not sure about a case like this, however if a civil war breaks out shutting down scheduled air travel foreign affairs will often make arraignments to help out affected citizens.

Good on you. Heartening to hear that there still are kind and generous people out there. Let's hope that everyone gets home or wherever they were going soon.

According to latest news, planes are flying in parts of western europe and having no problems... Will call LOT today to see if this is going out...
We had a couple of drinks last night, after news that he would definately be on the first flight out....
