That looks like a coud hedgerow.

The picture was taken behind my house in southern California.

That looks like a funnel cloud...a wannabe tornado.

Funnel clouds come in all shapes and sizes, but I found an image of a similar-looking one:

Were there any thunderstorms in the area that evening? If it really was an FC, you were really lucky it didn't touch down.
