Quotations - a Rant
Why, when you reply to a topic that interests you, do you find it necessary to quote all of the previous posts, generally more than one screen-length, before you reply? Do you think we are all brain-damaged? Do you think our reading comprehension is so deficient that we can't remember what we read 1 minute ago?
STOP IT!
How do you accomplish a check-list? How do you follow directions? How do you even function after you read something? When you read the paper, do you re-read each paragraph before you proceed to the next, whip-sawing your way down the page?
I don't get it - do you really think it is an aid to understanding the thread to endlessly quote?

On a number of other forums I belong to / participate on, this is actually a forum rule - and repeat offenders get banned. Generally the rule / general forum etiquette goes something like this:
- Do not quote the preceding post (i.e. the one immediately above yours); as it's assumed you're participating in an ongoing conversation.
- If you must quote a previous post, because you're responding to a particular point, then only quote the necessary section(s) of that post
It is generally acceptable to shorten the post you're quoting by using "..." before and after the quoted parts. It's also generally acceptable to insert <snip> (or other similar notation) to replace large chunks of a post.
Beyond that, you shouldn't edit a quoted post so as to mis-quote a person.
But I agree with xsbank, this is by far the worst forum on the internet for quoting ad nauseam. I know you guys are just doing it in jest in this thread - but far too many do this exact same thing in virtually every post. It's maddening!
Cheers,

Thank you Brewguy. The rest of you are too predictable - I had a bet that it would be Niss who did the first quote because, well, its just so Niss... Ollie wins the bet - too bad you are not here to collect. Niss, you're so late, so late you are, Niss!
I'll bet Joe will give you a membership discount if you don't add so much to his bandwidth.
