Sad day?
Let me get this straight. You feel sorry for a man who's life's work is to campain against the use of contraceptives, (80,000,000 people in Africa with HIV or AIDS) continues to entrench women as second class citizens, and lead an institution that continues to harbour petifiles? (yet another recently settled child molestation law-suit for $80 million US)
Good riddance. Too bad the next one won't be any better.

Sky: Artic is right. And maybe this religion is a bit conservative on some points and slow moving, but I personnally think that for those who need a religion, this one may be the least intrusive in your life. I mean they don't make you wear silly knives at school, don't ban alcool and premarital sex, don't ask their beleivers to go and knock on every doorstep of their neighbourhood on sunday mornings.

Yes, I do come from a christian family. No, I did not hear anything about the Pope passing. I'll check the news tonight. If he has passed, may God rest his soul in peace.

Actually, premarital sex is a no no, unless you're an altar boy of course.gig wrote: I mean they don't make you wear silly knives at school, don't ban alcool and premarital sex, don't ask their beleivers to go and knock on every doorstep of their neighbourhood on sunday mornings.

The Catholic Church is very much against pre-marital sex and drunkeness (alcohol is not "evil"... it's when you abuse it and get drunk that causes problems).gig wrote:Sky: Artic is right. Pope JPII is a very liberal person when it comes to social issues: he changed the Catholic church's stance on capital punishment and vehemently opposed it... he was very much against both wars in Iraq... he argued very much in favour of giving more support to the 3rd world countries in terms of debt relief and financial aid... etc.
When it comes to religious issues, he is very conservative: he opposes gay marriage... he opposes birth control... he opposes female ordination... etc.
I really do admire, however, how he taught to be forgiving and loving of others, no matter what their religion or background. He opened his doors and befriended many Jews, muslims, etc, something many other Popes dared not do. Also, not only did he forgive the person who shot him and tried to kill him, but he kissed him on the cheek to show him and the world that he holds no grudges.
I do not agree with everything this Pope has stood for, but I think we can learn a lot from him. It appears that he is gracefully accepting his death with much dignity.

I'll give him respect because of what he did for the Polish Underground during WW2 and that made him a decent human being. There's been more people killed, murdered, raped, tortured and lives ruined throughout the history of mankind over various religions than any other cause. I'll therefore not involve myself in the good or bad points of any religion because they all bear blame for the aforementioned throughout history. I trust that they will allow him to pass in peace and dignity as a human being and not allow him to turn into a "vegetable" on tubes. He's lived a very full life....let him go if it's "his time".....and grant him that much respect.

Well, it's official Pope John Paul II has died about 1/2 hour ago according to the BBC. It truly is the end of an era, a sad day indeed.
You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
