Cat, I read an article in the paper that was commenting on the very thing you're mentioning. It said that because of the internet and all of these message boards and instant message programs that people's grammer has gone to the dogs. It actually showed an excerpt from an application for a job... Wow.

I agree with you. Mistakes happen, but laziness has a big impact on it. I know I've made my mistakes, too. The biggest one I think is the apparent inability to hit the shift key to type an upper case letter. Programs like Word that automatically correct mistakes don't help. I leave the underline feature on so I know if I've made a mistake, but that's about it.

Just my opinion.

P.S. How many people are double-checking their posts around 3 to 5 times before sending while on this thread?

So what's the story here, are you supposed to show up for food dressed in rags? Out of curiosity, how many days earlier was it when you passed it?

Benwa,

do you know if this software works properly with Mozilla Firefox browsers? It doesn't show anything on the website.

Thanks

LearJet Driver, for FireFox there's SpellBound but I never tried it. I'm currently spell checking the old way. Let me know how it works out for you.

I just installed SpellBound. It's not the easiest extension to install, but it does work well !

You just right-click in the window after you typed your message and there it is !

Enjoy !

How about "affect" and "effect".

That one drives me nuts.

Instead of going to all the trouble to install these spell checkers - which might not work anyway (these aren't spelling errors, after all) - why don't people take the time to use the correct word.

If we can remember all the crap that we have to know to be pilots, why can't we learn when to use certain words.

"To" and "Too". Another common error that gets under my skin.

On the coffee machine at CYTZ. "Coffee - one doller"

Personally, I don't care whether or not someone can spell. What IS difficult is when people post, and, no matter how hard you try, you can not understand what they are trying to say.

Well troops, I just woke up Sunday morning and like Gord Lightfoot had sweet f.ck all to do, so here I am again.

With all this talk about the pope croaking and the discussion about if he goes to purgatory or not I got to thinking that maybe Avcanada is pilots purgatory?

Makes perfect sense to me when I think about it because most of us here are thinking about what hell aviation has turned into lately and seek solace here in pilots purgatory.

Now back to the issue of words and their spelling and most important their meaning.

For me I find the dictionary in book form is the most educational means of searching the information that I need.

The computer is great, however it is instant gratifiacation and lacks the work effort to learn.

What think all of you lost souls out there? :smt023

As smeodboy siad erleair, you dno't hvae to slepl crorctely to get the pnoit asrcos, but it lokos a lot bteter. Wehn you are dinvrig dwon the raod and you see sniomethg slpeled worng, it ullausy dnoes't lvaee a good iompessrin.

By the way, it doesn't matter what the order of the letters are in a word: as long as the first and last letters are correct, we can understand it.

Signs on the side of the road crack me up. Outside the fire station last month where I live (paraphrasing): "During a fire know youre escape routes." I guess you don't have to know your written language well to save someone from a fire. The best for a laugh is billboards outside a strip joint. At least, so I've been told.

For a laugh (or if you feel the need to enhance your vocabulary) go to http://www.urbandictionary.com(not a work friendly site) and look up the word "pilot" Does the whole world know that most pilots can't spell properly?? See below:

1. Pilot
An underpaid, underappreciated, and overconfident individual who has the inability to spell and write proficiently. Any person (regardless of intelligence level) can be a pilot, as long as he/she possesses good memorization skills and good hand-eye coordination. Individual spends thousands of dollars on flight training and university costs to achieve the life of: airline bankruptcies and furloughs, pay reductions, the potential loss of their medical certificates leading to the loss of a job/financial income, significant debt, lack of employment, and consistent scrutiny from the media and comedy figures. Usually retires overweight and dies early. "Hey baby, I'm a pilot... wanna make out?"

Cat: I forgot to mention that a friend of mine was an F/O on a Canso for Canadian Pacific when they used to run the coast...ended up on the DC-6s, doing the South America run before he got furloughed and went back to school and became a dentist "...quit the police department, and got myself a steady job..."
