Norway - Cirrus BRS chute deployed - four uninjured . . .
A SR-20 flying at 9000 feet over Norway on May 28/10 encountered heavy icing, pilot reported aircraft became impossible to controls, and lost 6000 feet. BRS chute was deployed, aircraft came down in a mountainous area with no injuries reported to the four on board.
A search was started after the aircraft failed to respond to ATC, when one of the passengers called Oslo Airport via his cell phone.

That's some good news. BRS saved the day again for some lucky people!
Re: Norway - Cirrus BRS chute deployed - four uninjured . .
Yeah, thank goodness for BRS. It's nice when good decision making doesn't have to get in the way of making a flight.
(BTW - I am happy for the survivors and their families. And obviously I wasn't there and don';t have any details besides the scant comments by the OP. However, a small, single piston engine aircraft in HEAVY icing screams of poor decision making. At least in my head.)

Being stupid around airplanes is a capital offence and nature is a hanging judge!

ya, great outcome in this case, but I wonder how many people have been killed because they flew their Cirrus thinking the chute will save them no matter what. I mean, it does give a false sense of security - I always thought it was more a marketing tool rather than a real safety mechanisin, but I'll admit, it does have it's place.
Re: Norway - Cirrus BRS chute deployed - four uninjured . .
nice outcome...always wondered what would happen if it landed in mountains
have there been any instances of unsuccesful deployments?

Funny, a bunch of us were just talking about the high level of inexperience and lack of skill is required to fly a cirrus. Just have to take off and land. Probably the best plane in the world for idiots who have $600K and no brains to fly.
Oops, I screwed up, oh well, pop the chute. Like 5X5 said, WTF is a small single engine plane doing, flying in extreme icing.

What little I do know is either not important or I've forgotten it!

Close to home. Sucessful deployment, though there are so many things wrong on this one.Tim wrote:nice outcome...always wondered what would happen if it landed in mountains

In Feb 2010 edition of Flying, it reported a SR20 in Florida that crashed with 2 fatalities. They were doing low level training and didn't have enough height AGL when CAPS deployed and smashed into the ground.

Wikipedia lists all the deployments to date.
Quick stats for them, including this latest one. 11 out of the 22 deployments occured in IMC or at Night, for a variety of reasons (three occured at night) The rest were a mix of mechanical failures (4) and a odd mix including a pilot medical problem, a mid air collision and what would appear to be a training stall spin (the two fatalities mentioned above). Also in at least 2 of the deployments weight limits were a contributing factor. Reading the NTSB reports that are available for the American occurances is very telling.
