Military ATC training with NavCanada
Hello All,
My girlfriend is joining the military as an AC Op and she was told that her ATC training will be completed with NavCanada in Cornwall so I was wondering if anyone could give us some info as to what she can expect, especially from the Military side of things. Also, what are the accommodations like? Will she still have to deal with anything from the military while she's training?
I'm a pilot myself and I've been on Avcanada for a number of years but I have very little knowledge of the ATC side of things so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Chax

Here's a bit of info anyhow.
All of her training is done by the Military. It just happens to be at the Nav Canada Training and Conference Centre. Here's a link to the accommodations. http://conference.navcanada.ca/accommodations.php
It's just like staying in a hotel, rooms a bit smaller though.

Thanks a lot for the info. So if I understand correctly all the training will be completed by the military? She was under the impression that the training was going to be run by NavCanada.

DND leases space from Nav Canada. It is the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations (CFSACO).
I am 99% sure that all training is done by the forces (I'm saying this because I knew a military controller who taught the VFR course and also was a course director). Not that I asked her specifically about this, but I don't know of any civilian controller who has been part of the DND training in the 13 years I've been with Nav Canada. Someone else may know better though.............
They also wear their uniforms during their training day.
They even have a mess on the academic side, cheapest beer in Cornwall!!!

Military runs the training, not NavCanada. It's just in NavCan's building. The accomodations are nice, it's like a hotel. The food isn't bad either, but gets old fast.

That sounds about right.W0XOF wrote:DND leases space from Nav Canada. It is the Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Control Operations (CFSACO).

Thank goodness for that.natej wrote:Military runs the training, not NavCanada.
Turn right/left heading XXX, vectors for the hell of it.

Beside's the black hole you sit in while waiting to hear back during the application process, Navcanada training is top notch in my opinion. I've been through FSS and VFR Basic.cyeg66 wrote:Thank goodness for that.natej wrote:Military runs the training, not NavCanada.

Tell your girlfriend that she will have to study VERY hard. A friend of mine is gonna go there for his second try. He failed the first time at the procedural part of the course. A passing mark was 95%. Just 4 cadets of 14 others managed to graduate. But if you are really good, than, probably, you will have a chance.
Good luck anyway
