Max Duty Day

Post by Gannet167 »

Just wondering what your rules are regarding maximum crew day / duty day and when it's deemed to have begun?

Are there any additional rules regarding flying time (in addition to when you show up to work and start your crew day)?

What is the minimum crew rest and when do you deem it to have started?

Any special rules if you cross several time zones or begin your work day late at night/early morning?

Cheers.

Sadly it often depends on who you work for. Actual duty day is when you show up for work to when you complete your duties AFTER you've shut down the engine. Some places like to play with that and set a time like 30 minutes before wheels up or something which is ok if that's when you arrived for work however if you showed up 1 hour prior to make your departure time than that's when your duty ACTUALLY started. Than again nobody will know unless you have an incident or accident.

A wise man once told me "don't mess with even the little things like that because if something happens even if it's not your fault the first thing Transport will ask is "when did your day start, how much rest did you get ....etc" and you can get violated for something completely unrelated to what just happened"

14 hours for commercial ops(703 & 704), 15 hours for private ops (604).

You can have a split duty day up to 17 hours, where there is rest time in the middle that is double the duty time extension. For example, if you have 2 hours actual rest time(ie not including transfer time from the airport) in a suitable environment (eg hotel room) in the middle of the duty day, you can extend your duty day by 1 hour (15 hours total). If you have 4 hours rest, you can go to 16 hours, and if you have 6 hours rest, you can go to 17 hours.

8 hours maximum for a single pilot if flying Instrument Flight Rules. No flight time limits for VFR.

8 hours of rest time. add transfer time from airport to that. So really, minimum time off duty is realistically 10 hours for most..have to drive home, eat a meal, or drive to hotel, eat a meal, etc.

Not in North America. I believe that European rules do have regulations that apply.

How many 14 duty hour days can you do in a row if you stay within the flight time limits? Unlimited?

To split a duty day you have to have a minimum of 4 hours rest and a maximum of 6.

You can have more than 6 hrs rest, but the max you can extend day is 3 hrs.

Thats what I was getting at, the max you can extend is 3 hrs with 6 hrs rest. Thanks.

correct me if I'm wrong but the amount of the extension also has to be added to your crew rest period - ie. duty day extended to 17 hours, you must then have 11 hours prone rest? Or is that just in the case of 'unforeseen'?

That is for 704 ops, in 703 ops as many as you want.

If you are on reserve or fly under contrail rules, if called out between 10pm and 6 am no duty day over 10 hrs

@OceansEdge
That's correct, you need to increase your rest period by an amount at least equal to the amount of extension to your duty day.

as well some 703 operations have an ops spec that allow them to have 15 hour duty days

as for when your day ends in 703 it is when the engines shut down and 704 is when the engines shut down + 15 minutes
