Multi PIC/Single PIC? Does it Matter?

Post by bluenote »

When an aspiring pilot wants to "log PIC time" in the end do prospective employers "prefer" multi PIC or single PIC and does it really matter as long as it's PIC or does flying the twin give you a heads up on finding employment?

Just wondering and asking the individuals out there that might know a story about employers and what they say.

And does PIC twin time on a Piper Apache being an old technology bird or time in a King Air matter?

thanks

piston SEL PIC time is good

piston MEL PIC time is better

turbo-prop MEL PIC is better yet

turbo-jet MEL PIC is better than that

On-type PIC is best of all.

I'm not sure what point you are at in training or your career....

but make sure you get your 25 hours x-country pic at night when you are time building!

Donald, I'm just a measly class 4 flight instructor without an instructing job just looking for some info that's all.

Why did you make that comment about night cross country in particular?

Night cross country (or lack thereof) is usually the crux for those trying to get an ATPL...

Well from where I sit, first off, what Donald said +1, I am just waiting on the TT number to trip for my ATPLs oh and of course 14 hours of night x-country PIC that I am short :? So yes get that done.

As for MPIC for SPIC, depends what you want to do. If you want to fly floats well then SPIC on floats is what you need. If you have aspirations of flying turbo props next then yes MPIC is what you need. There is a magic 500 MPIC for insurance that people like to see. In fact there are some operators that will not make you a captain without the 500 MPIC. At the end of the day PIC is good but if you can get MPIC get it.

Again, does it matter if you put this twin PIC in a piper apache or a seminole, seneca, comanche, etc?

The aircraft you listed are virtually the same.

Unless the next place you are going has the same type of aircraft, all they are going to see is 'light twin' and how many hours you got.

MEL PIC makes insurance companies happy. Again, they are generally type-agnostic.

Multi would be better, though if your TT isn't high enough no one is going to hire you on a Multi anyways.

I don't get how people don't have the small amount of night hours, heck flying at night rocks,(I think I had that 14 pic xcountry before I hit the 50hr TT mark) people just avoid it or something??

Do you know that for sure? I have been involved in purchasing insurance for a couple companies and I beleive this "it's an insurance requirement" BS is just another way some employers tell applicants to PFO. I have asked the experience question to a broker I used to deal with. The unerwriter had no experience requirements whatsoever (I had 1000TT and 100 multi with 15 multi PIC) and I got a job SPIFR in a 'ho. What the broker told me is they sometimes want to get a general picture of the experience level of people flying the insured airplanes. And even then, inexperience makes a very small impact on premiums for commercial operations. The largest contributor to premiums is the hull value and undercarriage (ie floats)

I think you have the answer already, but, in case you still have doubts, take a look at the job postings on AvCanada at the moment and they will give you a good idea what prospective employers require in terms of TT and PIC.
