Agreed. And maybe pull Emirates rights altogether in retaliation for the blackmail.

I think we should invade UAE, seems the troops are already in place

Re: Camp Mirage
The issue here is threatening us. Pathetic, yet typical, way of fostering good relations in the Gulf.
I'm not sure that pissing us off even more and forcing us into the big expense of moving, is going to foster a healthy realtionship in the future.
There are no equal benefits to Canadian carriers with regards to the UAE - Canada market place. In fact, there is minimal traffic, certainly not enough to justify the lift they propose. Both carriers focus on sixth freedom traffic. It's all flow traffic that they will steal off of European flights. The way to divert such traffic is with price. All Gulf carriers are notoroius for tanking market fares. I know, I worked for one for three years. They are not loved by European airlines because of their market practices, which go beyond pricing.
They are excellent quality airlines. Very good operations, award winning onboard service. While they may be good for consumers, they will hurt Canadian carriers. As Canadian's, we should be trying to protect our industry. Hating Air Canada is not the issue. These guys will make life unpleasnant for any Canadian carrier at all and any cost. Their governments own them and tclaim they are wildly profitable regardless of market behaviour, global recessions, SARS, fuel prices, global drop in demand.
I'm a strong believer in open markets, open skies and allowing the market to decide who stays and who goes. I also support Canadian aviation and put its long term interests ahead of any other carrier or government. Go pound sand, I say.

Re: Camp Mirage
How's about we pull our troops out of Afghanistan and not worry about this stuff.
Re: Camp Mirage
Yeehaw... Back to Cyprus!
Don't even bother me with a medal.
Ditch that UAE sand pit and get us to a proper airfield with good infrastructure.
And oh yah, beaches, bars, and... well a whole lot more then what MIRAGE offers for your off shift time.

Hmmmmmmm, I wonder if Helen's Bar in Nicosia is still going. Anyone remember the famous red chair. If you were a virgin coming in, you were not when you left!

All those things can be had there...

Re: Camp Mirage
Done both... I would still choose to take nipple beach, errr Nisida Beach, and the rest that Cyprus island has to offer. But to each his own.

Re: Camp Mirage
I can tell you that the base is not Top-Secret as pretty much anyone within 50km of Dubai knows it's there, in fact the US, Germany, Dutch, Australians, and UK are also there. I know this because I spent almost a year and a half working right beside the Canadian and Australian contingent while working on the SAR program in the UAE. While threatening the Canadian government is not the way to go about things, i for one would much rather fly Emirates or Etihad than Air Canada anyday. The service and aircraft are superb in comparison to AC.

Re: Camp Mirage
It's official. We are leaving Camp Mirage. I am glad the country did not bend to the demands made by the U.A.E.
"MacKay's confirmation of the exit from Camp Mirage comes a day after Mohammed Abdullah Al-Ghafli, the UAE's Canadian ambassador, said the failed negotiations would "undoubtedly affect" bilateral relations between the two countries."
He sounds like a friggin cry baby because he did not get his way.
We will be much better off in either Baden, Germany (one of our last two bases in that country) or Cyprus (Canadian U.N. mission there for over 30 years). I have misgivings about operating out of Pakistan. Look how they closed down the border for 11 days. This allowed for a number of fuel tankers to be destroyed in attacks by the Taliban.

This is just plain abusrd...KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A plane carrying two cabinet ministers and the head of the Canadian military was denied the right to land in the United Arab Emirates on Monday in a diplomatic rebuke from the wealthy Gulf country.
The UAE closed its airspace to Defence Minister Peter MacKay, Veterans Affairs Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn and Chief of the Defence Staff, Gen. Walt Natynczyk, who were on their way from a three-day visit to Afghanistan, a military source in Ottawa confirmed to The Canadian Press.
Just hours earlier in Kandahar, MacKay had confirmed that Canada was being forced to vacate its military base in the UAE following the failure of negotiations to expand aviation links between the two countries."And at this point, we will abide by the wishes of the Emirates, and... we will be leaving the base."
The UAE has been seeking more landing rights in Canada for its national airlines, Emirates and Etihad. Amid strenuous objections by Air Canada, the talks stalled recently.

Re: UAE closes airspace to Cdn Gov't
I think the best thing about this situation is that now finally it will shine some light on the way the UAE and Emirates conduct their business. They prefer to go about it in the shadows, like cockroaches, basically stifling any sort of reporting in their own region. And for most Canadians it's too far away for them to care. But Canadians - especially in the industry - SHOULD care, because it will only become a larger issue in the future as Emirates attempts to grow not incrementally but as rapidly as possible.
This isn't about Air Canada versus Emirates anymore...it wasn't an Air Canada flight denied access through UAE airspace, it was a Canadian Forces aircraft with our Minister of Defence and Chief of the defence, for god's sake...

This wasn't about AC vs EK in the first place! It's the Government who controls who flies in and out of Canada not AC. Good for them to take a stand against EK. It would every airline in Canada allowing EK free access.

Scrap the bilateral, revoke EK/EY overflight rights and evict EK/EY from YYZ ASAP.
Political blackmail should not be tolerated.

Re: Emirates VS Canada
We'll lets see, we export our oil to America so they have a stable supply, and we in turn must import 55 percent of our oil from all over the world - including the UAE.
Canadian firms have Billions of dollars invested in UAE, and we export Billions of dollars worth of goods each year to UAE.
We are in a war that we were bullied into, that hardly anyone (if anyone) supports, and we don't even phone the bullies to fix our UAE problem.
We have nothing to retaliate with, McKay is lucky they didn't shoot him down, because if they did, we'd do what???
Nothing. We'd accept an apology if it was offered, that's about it.
At least we'd have a new Minister of National Defence!!!

Oh really, would you like to show credible evidence to support your claims?

Re: UAE closes airspace to Cdn Gov't
Read in papers the other day, that they are evicting Canadian Forces from one of the military bases in the Gulf, because they (UAE) wanted more flying to Canada!! What the heck does our military have to do with EK and AC??
So apparently our gov't is pulling/relocating those troops to Cyprus or somewhere....it's just plain silly on behalf of UAE!
