Re: iphone apps
Don't worry man, I don't even have a cell phone.
How much do these iphone thingys cost anyways? Something that cool must be expensive. $$$
And how do these app things work? Do you pay monthly for them?

AeroWeather. Don't leave home without it. TAF's and METAR's. With the Pro version, you can see the airport from Google Maps. It gives runway info, and lots of information for US airports.
Real Racing for a non-aviation app. I have spent hours racing my son over a wi-fi connection.

Re: iphone apps
The pricier (but in my opinion nicer) apps are ForeFlight and LogTen Pro:
http://coradine.com/logten-mobile/
http://www.foreflight.com/
I'm a fan of ForeFlight, it sounds like the weatherapp previously mentioned but it can do a lot more. Such as VFR sectionals, weather charts, airport diagrams (although not as many for canadian airports). It is pricy but comes with a lot.

CoPilot for quick, easy and complete VFR flight planning.

Re: iphone apps
Has anyone with the 4g on Telus or Rogers unlocked their phone? If so, how has it worked so far? I need an Iphone 4 but I'm not excited about paying the $800 for an unlocked one from apple.

Re: iphone apps
Trying to decide between co-pilot and foreflight. I tried the demo version of foreflight but it doesn't give you a real perspective of it's full functionality. I have read about the differing capabilities such as the lack of weather in co-pilot, but I am curious if anyone has tried both and give an opinion as to which one is better for the iPad.
Thanks

Re: iphone apps
Mine's jailbroken but not unlocked. The unlock is just another program to run, as far as I know, but you lose it every time you update the firmware on the phone or iTunes on your desktop. I don't need the unlock so haven't bothered.Freeride wrote:Has anyone with the 4g on Telus or Rogers unlocked their phone? If so, how has it worked so far? Second references for:
Aeroweather
CoPilot
Other fun stuff:
AOPA Airports Guide (if you're an AOPA member)
X-Plane
iHUD (new version coming that will make use of the solid state gyro in the iPhone4)

Weathereye and StormTeam2 (not specifically for aviation but shows radar returns)
Skycharts Pro (shows charts and puts the plane on the charts)
Skype, MSN messenger, Facebook
Air Video Server, CineXplayer and Zumocast (stream videos / music from my home pc to my iphone - great when I'm on the road)
Foreflight - pretty great flight planning app
TiltshiftGen, TiltShiftFocus, ClearCam, Oldbooth+, Pro HDR, Vint Shift (camera apps for taking cool pix)
NY times, Globe and Mail, FML, TFLN, Cracked, Asylum (funny / interesting stuff to read)
Flixter, Yelp, Tim Hortons, Boozehound, Restaurantica, Urban Spoon, Yellow Pages (finding entertainment on the road)
Navigon (great GPS app, but a bit pricey at $70)

Re: iphone apps
Damn you all - I spend enough on Apps for this thing without having other people 'recommending' good ones. Now I've got to go do some more shopping on the App Store.
That said, I've just recently started using Zoompass (mobile payments) again. I had it before, but there was no App for my old cell phone - but the Apps for both the iPhone & BlackBerry are awesome. It looks like they've also come out with an RFID sticker you can put on your phone so you can use the MasterCard PayPass system too.

Re: iphone apps
Good point .... certainly something to keep in mind and to be aware of.
Although I'm not terribly worried about something like this. It's one reason I like the concept of Zoompass or other pre-paid accounts. If the account is ever compromised, I've only lost the $40-60 that I keep loaded on it. Sure, it would suck to loose $60, but I'll risk that much for the convenience of it.

Re: iphone apps
'Light' I actually use this one quite a bit given these dark days, if you are used to using your cell phone as an impromptu flashlight, prepare to see the light.
'Dragon Dictation' Don't use it much, but fun to mess with.
'Remote' Turns your iPhone into a remote for iTunes. You do have to keep iTunes open, but on my Mac it will wake it up from sleep. Was fun for making my wife think the computer was going crazy until my kids gave me away.
'iBooks' Quite a few free titles in there.
'Rotary Dialer' Just a neat app that turns the touchscreen into a rotary dialer so you can show your kids how hard it was.
'360 Panorama' Allows you to sweep the camera for panoramic shots.
'Retro Camera' Has filters that turns a decent phone camera into an instamatic, polaroid, or box camera.
'Dictionary (Free)' Self-explanatory.
'Star Walk' An amazing astronomy program that set the 'view' to the way your phone is pointed. You can also match stars through the camera and find satellites.
'CBC Hockey'
'CBC Radio'
'National Post'
'Globe and Mail'
'Canucks' They did alright last night, but they'd better keep their socks pulled up.
'Sound Hound' Pretty intelligent song title finder. I sang the Beatles 'You've got to hide yourself away' and it recognized it. Recorded samples are bang on for the most part.
