What do I need to fly Ultralight Aircraft?
Hi! I'm 17 years old, and i want to become a pilot. There's an exam at CQFA college in Quebec province very soon to select next year future student pilots. I think i am generally well informed about what is flying. Exept about law... I want to buy an Ultralight and before, i need to know if it's legal in canada to fly an ULA in Canada.
(I don't know much about air transportation law in canada. I want to know more... any source?)
Also, any tips for my exam?

Your reference to all the air transportation laws in Canada can be found on Transport Canada's web site. You can find the Canadian Aviation Regulations Here.pozine wrote:(I don't know much about air transportation law in canada. I want to know more... any source?)
Hopefully someone can give you a reference to the particular law you are talking about. If not, it will be found in the CAR's.

Pozine,
I am assuming your living in Quebec, oui? With that assumption here is a link to a list [not sure how current] of ultralight organizations in Quebec.
http://www.ultralightnews.com/pilotslou ... htm#Quebec
Also here is another link to COPA [Canadina Owners and Pilots Association] with some information about ultralights flying.
http://www.copanational.org/FlyingUltralightInCa.cfm
I would recommend you get involved with one of these organizations first. Get your ultralight licence and spend some time in the ultralight community before you buy one. Getting some advice from people who know something about ultralights and buying them will be invaluable. No different then any big ticket item you purchase. Because they will certainly have a lot more combined experience and knowledge then you. This will prevent you from making a potentially very costly (!$$$$$!!!) mistake if you go it alone. But its your money and time, so you make the call. Good luck and fly safe.

A good place to start would be by contacting Ultralight Pilots Association of Canada ( UPAC)pozine wrote:Hi! I'm 17 years old, and i want to become a pilot. They are the ultralight equivalent of COPA and will be an invaluable resource for information.

Actually, i want to be an airliner pilot. Fly the heavies, the 777, etc...
I thought it would be a good idea to start to fly an ultralight before I go to the aviation college (if i'm accepted). This way, I would gather some experience.

and start at a airport that has a controlled airspace, you will lean alot in a short amount of time. If you decide to continue on you will have a good start.

With a little punctuation and grammar, this might make sense. FAIL.burhead1 wrote:A the sports star was up in one last summer nice little plane but lacks aileron as in run out of in crosswind

Re: What do I need to fly Ultralight Aircraft?
I started my flying on the Merlin EZ ultralight at Blue Yonder Aviation. I thought it was a good way to start, as it's a simple taildragger aircraft, much like a cub, with minimal instrumentation. The cost was significantly lower than certified aircraft at $80/hr wet (compared to $150 for a 172). You can count 10 hours of ultralight time towards your PPL, and it's a good way to develop the initial stick and rudder skills before moving on to something heavier. Make sure you get a good instructor though - some ultralight guys have a reputation of being a little too carefree about their flying for good reason.
