Don't like the cop threads?
The mods asked for a moratorium on them, which you ignored.
This site is a zit on an elephant's ass
I beg to differ, but if you truly feel that way, you are free to go elsewhere.
Pertinent, even opposing views, should be published
Yes, but we are guests here in AvCan. This is not your house, so you should respect the rules of the owner of the house. If the owner of the house asks me to stop making fun of left-wing people, I would respect that, even though I might not agree with it, because I am a guest.

See the difference?

I don't see why a web site like this would be treated any differently. Don't like the cop threads? DON'T click on them. Don't like a user? Make them a 'foe'. Why is that so difficult for some of you?
If I don't like the dress code at a bar I don't go. If you don't like the rules here than don't come.

Personally I think every forum needs a misc forum including this one. All that will happen is the drivel will get into the Gen Section requiring more moderation by the mods.

Keep the Misc section and Mod the B.S there. At leat it is localized there. Unfortunately the only way to deal with this problem is thru the use of a so called "ban hammer" Start banning those who intentionally create threads not for discussion but to piss people off.

I know I know the mods feel they are stretched thin however I think getting rid of Misc will actually create more work for the mods.

The best structures I've seen use a point system for certain violations. You hit 5 points you might get a holiday for a few weeks. Hit 10 points and you could face a few months or even a permanent ban.

You guys can't even knock this crap off in a thread about why you had your forum taken away!

The problem seems to be that a small minority use the misc forum to relentlessly publish their agenda both in thread creation and dragging it into threads others create. You are hijacking the popularity stemming from AvCanada's main purpose to propagate your own opinions and message. If these people went and made their own pages expressing all their information, no one would visit. Instead they abuse the traffic on this one.

Bingo. It really amounts to some people spamming the forum. Which should be against the rules.

Hedley, I confess I haven’t read the ‘moratorium on cop’s’ thread, and assumed it was directed at a particular thread starter. It seems to have disappeared, so I have no idea what was written.
In defence of The Professor, he is not a one dimensional character, and I don’t recall him ever staring
a thread attacking the police. As I recall his thread header was a quote from the newspaper article.
I think the issue has gotten out of hand. Do we really need to shutdown a forum to make a point?
It seems a bit extreme to me.

My post (which I believe was my first-ever on the subject of police, btw) was done about three weeks after Sulako's request. IABD himself [I think it was IABD -- the thread's been purged, so can't say for sure, but it was a mod] said it was appropriate due to the length of time since Sulako's request and the heinous nature of the video clip. Several users then remarked that they probably wouldn't have seen the story were it not for my post, so I think there is value in that.

If there were lots of posts about basket weaving, would you demand a stop to that as well?

And do you otherwise read every single thread in the Misc forum, or do you skip many that you are not interested in? Why not skip the cop threads then?

Opening a police thread and then complaining about it makes about as much sense as knowingly walking up to the front door of a whorehouse and then complaining when a whore answers the door. You should have gone to the next house instead...

Edited re, not positive which mod made the comment.

Then this perfectly demonstrates that banning the forum isn't the solution, doesn't it?

The initial thread with the video has almost 800 hits, and the one discussing it's editing has 788. That's 1600 hits gone from this web site (and its ad indexing), not to mention the tens of thousands of others from all the other threads, regardless of the topic. That's a lot of traffic.

You miss the point entirely. You rudely ignored the moderator's requests, with the result that the Misc forums is locked, and may disappear entirely. Congratulations.

If you visit someone's house, do you drop your pants and take a crap on their living room carpet, because you rudely don't care what they think? You might claim that it's an important and integral portion of your right to free speach to be able to crap on anyone's living room carpet, but it's still offensive.

I may be wrong, but I suspect you would not be so courageous in person. Internet courage, derived from anonymity, is tiresome and childish.

Mods, please delete this thread in it's entirety.

The fact is, real people have real opinions. THere's no sense in pretending they do not exist.
Do not be scared of opinions!! Your neighbour, brother, sister, or co worker is posting on here.

Not as I see it. Sulako asked for a moratorium on police threads for a couple of weeks. Prof waited three weeks before posting that video; that doesn't seem like he ignored the request to me. STL came along and deleted all the drivel which I for one appreciated but stated the thread had value so he was leaving it up. Apparently another mod didn't agree so he deleted the entire discussion even though I couldn't find any discernable anti cop bias in it. With one exception, who I won't name but he reminds me of our favorite cop hater with his bias; the discussion seemed to be quite civil the last time I'd seen it, which was apparently a couple of hours before it disappeared. Granted that may have changed after I went to bed that night but it didn't seem to be the trend at the time. It almost seems to me that you're upping the ante in the rhetoric hoping to get this thread deleted.

Hedley, Professor, hit the PM button instead of the post button, we don't need to read this.

Anyhoo

I used to love the Misc Section, it was the first forum I'd read. In the last year it has lost it's charm, not just the police threads. There seems to have been an influx for users who are here to just stir the pot. In a few threads 1 post wonders show up make outrageous comments and are never seen again. What happened to Mods reviewing first time posters?

I was one of the outspoken users on the cop threads, not because of their message but due to the flooding of them, I stopped even looking at the Misc Section for weeks at a time just due to the shear number of threads. These threads always seemed to be started by one user, this user never seemed to post anywhere else and when they did their posts were still rubbish. I only have one "foe" on this site and said user is it, but only after a immature PM from said user. Yes If I don't like them I don't have to click, in fact most of the time I didn't, but I still have to scroll through the dozen or so threads to find anything even remotely interesting. It did seem to get better after the stop order was placed. Now I saw the video before it was posted and felt it did need to be seen but I didn't post it due to the request. Should it have been posted? Of course but unfortunately due to the last few months of topics it was the straw that broke the back.

Yes this is an Aviation Forum and I do mostly read the aviation threads but I also like to have a good laugh now and then and the Misc forum provided this, it was also a good place to vent. I don't belong or even go to any other Forums on the web, so this is it for me, and lately it has lost it's charm. It seems to be getting better with the return of Cat and IABD but we have lost some great posters over the years, myself a few times (of course only for a week or two at a time). Go back a year or two and read the threads, they had a completely different feel.

I vote to keep the forum but with some changes to the rules, you are free to posts as before but Mods are free to remove/merge repetitive themes. Maybe have a few new Mods who are just in charge of the Misc forum. Mods have a heavier hand in dealing with users who get out of line. Finally first time posters who first posts are nothing but drivel or a troll are immediately removed/punted

I vote to keep the Misc Section but with more refined rules of conduct

Let's keep this on topic, shall we? The misc section is locked, at least for now - it's clearly not working as it was intended, so something has to change. I have read every post in this thread, and I see that some people would like it to return, and I also see that some people would prefer that it not return. Joe is reviewing it. It may return soon, or it may return after a while, or it may not return. If it returns, it will return in a rebooted format.

As far as some of the other posts in this thread - please PM a mod if you have issues with another user - this thread is not the place to deal with them.

If you have something additional to contribute to this thread, please go ahead. If not, then I suggest that it's not in a member's best interests to spam this (or any other) thread.

Lets call this forum temporarily closed for repair and overhaul. I've received a ton of great feedback since the closure of the misc. forum and hope to have a new area opened for such discussion, in the next couple of days.

Thanks for all the PM's and emails!

This is the photo section on AvCom, which is South Africa's AvCanada.

http://www.avcom.co.za/phpBB3/viewforum ... 3ca13b3a40

For example; Seen at FALA ( Lanseria ) is the title; http://www.avcom.co.za/phpBB3/viewtopic ... 15&t=17033 followed by 292 pages of photos and info.

Very cool way of posting photos of specific airports, it includes comments of the photos,
and a camaraderie of local aviation buffs.

As posters on flickr, airliners.net, myaviation, etc., could be invited to post photos.
Just food for thought.

Was it the mentioning of Yaks in my come back post? Did I offend any Yak lover...or lover of Yak?

*break break*

Racist posts? Cop haters? WTF are you people doing in the MISC forum?! :?

Sounds like we're in an economic recession here....wait, we ARE! It's interesting to witness people's tolerance for each other erode as soon as times get tougher and tougher. Combined with the historical fact that at the end of every great empire, and just before it collapsed...it's citizens went crazy.

Keep open the gates to the Avcanada Coliseum...The Roman ghosts have returned.

As you were.
