Where's the beef... in your butter?

So, in a rare domestic moment, I made peanut butter cookies this evening.
Glancing at the ingredients label on my Costco-sized jar of Kraft smooth peanut butter, I was surprised to learn that guess what?
Yup. There's no longer any butter in peanut butter.

Select roasted peanuts, soybean oil, corn dextrin, sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oil, salt. (1004K)

And what does 1004K mean? Google was obscure, but I have narrowed it down to something to do with the Wii system, a flouride compound, or genetically modified something or a chemical compound of unknown origins. I have no idea.

So, I'm thinking of trying to make my own peanut butter. With peanuts. And butter.

In the meantime, I am writing Kraft to ask what 1004K means and when butter was taken out of the ingredients. Maybe it was never in at all.

Hi Badgergirl, Try old fashion peanut butter. Can't be beat. only ingredients: Peanuts.
Adams or Kraft Natural are good. I have never seen it with butter included.

If you take the trip do yourself a huge favour and get a small burger or small cheeze burger from Five guys. I could be wrong but I don't think there was ever butter in the peanut butter. It was just that it spread like butter so they called it that.

And I know Five Guys - have been there twice. It's awesome, and from all accounts, they seem to be a decent corporate citizen and a massive success story of a mom and pop shop gone viral.

Because I have a cow a year custom butchered, I rarely eat beef when I'm out, but I had heard so much about that place, I gave in to temptation. It was worth the fall of grace.

My mom grew up in Hatton we used to get a half a cow from her step dad's farm north of there. Them's some good eatin' cows.

For sure. And actually hung for 21 days too, probably. My butcher will hang them for 21, most sort of try to hang a maximum of 14. But the stuff you're buying at most retail places... luck if it's been hung for two now.

Could the 1004K be a Kosher designation? 1004 being the inspector (rabbi's #) and 'k' meaning Kosher?

Good idea!
But I don't think so. I think it would be listed after the French ingredients too, and it's not.
And Kraft has some sort of similar number on every product, so it's probably a company specific thing.
I will email them tomorrow.

I stopped buying low fat Sour Cream, when reading the ingredients noticed teh total lack of any milk based products, and the %1 Ingredient? Propylene Glycol. I kid you not.

Rather work a bit more in the gym than eat that crap!

Take a look at your windsor salt ingredients. Why do they mix invert sugar into the salt?

This year, I am trying a little harder to cook whole foods. We don't eat out much (small towns are do seem to encourage healthier living) but my biggest challenge is vegetables.

I hate them. So much. It makes as much sense to me to eat broccoli as it does to take a big bite out of drywall. I don't see either as food.

Pickles, lettuce, corn and potatoes.

On the bright side, it would be pretty hard to mess with those foods.

No it didn't unless it was specified as soy sour cream.

You can find natural peanut butter in any store which should contain only peanuts and maybe salt (for flavour).

The sugar is in the salt to stabilize the potassium iodide to prevent it to converting to iodine

The nice thing about being here, is the food. Our cook buys everything from the market, and cooks everything from scratch. Even eggs and chicken are local production. I am in much better shape than I was 6 years ago when I came here. These are probably free years added to my life!

If you really want, you can buy some stuff sold by the US soldiers to local merchants.

Find a movie called "The botany of desire" the potato plant's history is pretty cool, some of them are poison, the one's they took to Ireland when used with cows milk provided a complete diet untill they failed for three years.

It also discusses the "new leaf potato" by monsanto, they can mess with plants pretty good now via GMO. Best part is no one can know what the long term effects of eating produce from the altered plants will be.

We were hardley going to the video store for the last few years because with kids I was renting 3 movies for a week and only watching 2. So when we got netflix I started watching all the stuff we missed and documentries.

It's perfect, have to go do something? Stop the movie and finish it later. That's where I caught that one too.
