Aerobatic Training Camps

Post by Jerz »

Hi guys. We will be organizing a camp or two with either Nikolay Timofeev or Sergei Boriak at Rocky next Summer. The first one hopefully around mid June. Drop me a message if interested.

I'd be interested. Can you PM me your email address please? What level would this camp be aimed at?

If you're just starting out (eg first year Sportsman) you could probably just have someone with a handheld and a red book critique your sequence: Shallow 45, short after, etc. Don't practice your mistakes over and over again.

Then, learn to deal with the wind: x-axis and y-axis. Keep it in the box, but oddly, you cannot let anyone see that you are compensating for the wind - you must appear to be flying in zero wind. If this sounds really weird, it's because it is

hedley is bang on in his observation about the wind. In the mid seventies, I was at the usual contest at either Centralia or Grand Bend when the pilots were protesting about the admittedly-strong winds blowing across the box towards the judging line in the early afternoon. After a hurried discussion, the competition was suspended until the winds died down.
A certain competitor, the Top Dog at the time, proceeded to climb into his single-place biplane and fly one of the Unlimited sequences in front of all of us, judges and pilots alike, and made it look like there was no wind at all.
It was uncanny: his airplane went straight up at the end of the box, no drift evident nor was the airplane canted into wind that we could tell. All through the extreme manouevres and widely-varying airspeeds, there was no sign of either wind aloft or compensating for it.
Still don't know how he did it...

Heh. It's all about creating illusions.

That pilot knew how to make it look like there was no wind for the judges. If you were elsewhere on the airport, looking at him fly, you could see him cheat

A good contest pilot know how to make it look like there's no wind, and stay inside the box.

A good airshow pilot knows how to make safe and simple stuff look exciting and dangerous

A quote from a pilot who has been flying airshows for a looong time:
Make the difficult look easy!
The easy look spectacular! and
Never attempt the impossible!

Next time at an airshow, watch the Snowbirds solo pilots carefully when doing their head on maneuvers. They always cross right at show center every time, no matter what the wind, if you watch and compare their turnarounds you can see them taking wind into account when one will start his turnaround a bit sooner than the other guy.

I have often wondered how competition guys do it. Lots of practice would be on important factor I guess.

OK guys. Looks like our Russian friends are not available in June. Therefore, we will have one camp around May 24, and another one, to put final polish on your competition form, around July 20th. It looks like we have enough interests already to fill both of those camps , but there may be a possibility to run two camps back to back at either date. We did that last year, and it worked very well, with costs being split between more people. Let me know well in advance, if interested, please.

The first camp at the end of May will be with Nikolay Timofeev. The 28-31 dates are full already, but we have an option to bring him earlier and run another camp May 24-27. We would need a minimum of 3 pilots. Let me know asap, if interested.
The second camp will be end of July and we may have an opening or two.

OK Guys. Due to popular demand, we will be extending July camp. Therefore we have one, possibly two slots available on July 30-Aug 02. The coach will be Sergei Boriak. Camp will be at Rocky Mountain House (CYRM). Let me know if interested.
Thanks
Jerzy
