Heh. For that money - $50K to $60K - I can get you a LOT more airplane than a hulk of a tutor with no engine.

I can't believe that those L29's are only worth $50. There you go kids - cheap way to buy some jet time*.

I really like the Ebay seller describing it as "a maintenance free jet."
Reminds me of an old business card floating around for "Grovel Airways" they operated "a complete line of maintenance free aircraft" ... the floatplane fleet was a Cessna 180, Norseman, and Otter. The IFR division was comprised of a 1957 Apache, and Beech 18 "provding twin engine reliability, and all weather operations."

I can't speak for that particular example of the type, but the iron curtain stuff is superbly engineered to require very little maintenance, and the maintenance that is required is generally very simple.
It's a philosophical difference. Iron curtain trainers were maintained by conscripted peasants, whom may or may not have seen a tractor before. Western stuff is maintained by PhD tech reps. Big difference.
Example. Do a set of brakes on an F-86, then do a set of brakes on a MiG, and get back to me.
Twenty years ago, when I first flew a P-51 (really TF-51) in Florida, the people that had it said their MiG-17 required far less maintenance. I didn't understand that then. I do now.

Anything with a RR Merlin needs alot of maintanence. They did back in the war, and still do now. The good thing is the Warbird community is growing, and there are a good deal of people who will do rebuilds of Merlins and the like. Yes, it is expensive.Hedley wrote:I can't speak for that particular example of the type, but the iron curtain stuff is superbly engineered to require very little maintenance, and the maintenance that is required is generally very simple.

As for the russian stuff, I may be wrong but I have heard that the types are very crude and parts are sometimes not interchangable from a/c to a/c. I know for a fact that the T-34 tanks were a nightmare.

WOW...good job Harper government selling/trading it's fleet of Snowbirds to go towards the purchase of new F35's.
He just needs to come up with 450 more million dollars to pay for each one.
hmmmm let's see...
Perhaps cutting back their pensions?
No.
Perhaps never hosting 2 Billion weekend parties for his buddies @ the Muskokas?
No.
Perhaps closing the taps on his spending of the country's LARGEST deficit ever?
NO.
Perhaps he may get a deal on the jets because of the clout and influence Canada has at the UN Security Council?
NO!

Not sure I understand that. UN is a complete clown show - waste of time. If Canada wanted to save money, stop giving $$$ to the UN every year.clout and influence Canada has at the UN Security Council?

No prob I'll expand. As you know, For the 1st time in 40+ year we got kicked off the UN security council. Someone isn't playing by the rules. Someone isn't liked by the rest of the UN. Whats the reason why that is? Something stinks. It's beyond us what happened behind closed doors and we maybe never find out. But for some reason...Stevoh's perceptions on foreign policy is challenging for other countries of influence and clout to swallow.Hedley wrote:Not sure I understand that. Agreed the UN is what it is but it is an important elite boys club that if it were not important to Stevoh...he wouldn't be spending 2 billion dollars at the G8/20 last summer.

You do realize that it is being privately sold, as in the government is not selling it..........I WAS Birddog wrote:WOW...good job Harper government selling/trading it's fleet of Snowbirds to go towards the purchase of new F35's.
Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
Thank goodness for that. I would be horrified if the UN "liked" Canada. Sort of like a Paul Bernardo Seal Of Approval (tm). No, thank you.Someone isn't liked by the rest of the UN
Don't let the facts get in the way. He's on a roll!is being privately sold

Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
Of course they sold it at some point??
There are three Malaysian Tutors 'G' models on the USA register, I note the article stated there are four private Tutors - so I assume the one for sale is the only Canadian Armed Forces Tutor around.
Curious how they came about purchasing it in the first place - I know it sits at Peterborough Airport and has been for sale for awhile for 35k with no bites?
I can't imagine it's worth much - if anything, any museums would just contact the CAF directly and try to get one - so privately I can't imagine a market - even if it was free.
Short of some Military enthusiasts parking it on his front lawn - (or Markham Airport?) - I don't see it selling at action - let alone for the prices they are talking. I could have bought the Westinghouse F104's for 50k and they were airworthy with engines!!! (3 of them).

Some very US-style attitudes towards the UN emerging in Canada. Whatever.
In any case and despite their inperfections, if organizations like Transport Canada or the UN didn't exist, somebody would have to try to invent something like it.

Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
It's not an "attitude". It's the UN track record, overseeing the genocide in Rwanda, and stealing billions of dollars in the Iraq "food-for-oil" corruption, etc etc. Some very US-style attitudes towards the UN emerging in Canada
I don't think we need more of that, and I don't think holding that opinion makes me a "bad Canadian".

Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
Hardly accurate to compare Russian aircraft production to T-34 Wartime production. Be similar to saying American aircraft were crude because Sherman Parts were not interchangeable (which they weren't in most cases - possibly more so than the T-34, since the M4 Sherman had at least 5 different powerplants it was produced with during the war, 4 different suspension/bogey/idler combos, and three different track patterns, 6 different transmissions - but did usually have better QC on parts if only because the factories were never in battlezones. But I digress...)warbirdpilot7 wrote: As for the russian stuff, I may be wrong but I have heard that the types are very crude and parts are sometimes not interchangable from a/c to a/c.
