Wow, I might start using this one as my signature.Hedley wrote: Iron curtain trainers were maintained by conscripted peasants, whom may or may not have seen a tractor before. Western stuff is maintained by PhD tech reps. Big difference.
You may want to start by looking up the official ranking on literacy levels, % of people with high education per capita etc for the pre-breakup USSR times. The data is all out there.
During the WW2 you did have a complete mix of people flying and maintaining the airforce. Just the sheer number of planes flying (and prior losses) would not support anything else, whatever was left were busy manufacturing the engines, airframes and weapons. So your peasants were fixing and flying those airplanes at the front lines. That's how post 1942 Luftwaffe was essentially eliminated on the eastern front.
The L29/L39 times - these were supported and maintain by the field crew (min college-level aircraft engineering officer-rank personnel), and the engine or airframe manufacturer field crew dispatched at scheduled intervals (every 800h I recall). The testing and ultrasound scanning equipment they had was hard to come by otherwise.

No problem. The runtime licensing fees are quite reasonableI might start using this one as my signature

I know a little bit about living with L39's. They are superbly engineered for ease of maintenance, oepration and durability. When I issued my father his L39 type rating - funny inversion, he was an F-104 test pilot, decades ago - after the ground school, he remarked that he was surprised that something so sophisticated only produced 3,800 lbs of thrust. I replied, "that's why they last so long".
Don't get me wrong, there is stuff that from a western persepective is weirder than batsh1t on iron curtain stuff. The brake lever on the stick, for example. WTF?! And, all the do-dads in the back seat to fail stuff in the front seat gives me nightmares. I have as much of that stuff lock-wired off, and I threaten pax in the back seat to NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. And, no throttle cut-off in the back seat?! WTF?!
Anyways, compare an L39 to a T-33 or F-86 and you will be impressed by how little maintenance is required, and how simple the maintenance is. I am merely a graduate engineer with 25 years of industry experience, so you don't have to take my opinion on it.

I agree on the ease of maintenance. What made me chuckle was the "maintained by conscripted peasants" line.
The relatively underpowered turbofan engine was there for a couple of reasons:
- it was readily available, no further development was required
- being lower power, it lasts and is reliable. The L39 is certified for continuos grass/dirt/gravel operation, and takes it easily.

Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
I just saw on the news that the Tutor was bought at the auction for $44,000 and will be sent to it's new home as part of a personal collection (of junk?) in Lloyminster.
Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
I work in Lloydminster, so if I hear any news or see it, I will let you know.

Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
Pretty cool...this Tutor actually did a tour as Snowbird lead back in 1990...

Re: Used Snowbird jet lands on auction block
I see the winning bid was $48,400
Still don't know a name on who won.

The news piece I saw on a Hamilton tv station interviewed the agent who said right on camera that he bid on the aircraft on behalf of his associate in Lloydminster whom was going to add it to his collection of odd collectibles that he had out there.Woxof38 wrote:Not coming to Lloydminster after all

For reporters from the Center of the Universe - Lloydminster and Calgary are pretty much the same place
Curious - how did this Tutor end up in private ownership in the first place??
Are there any other Canadian Armed Forces Tutors in private ownership???

This one somehow made it onto the US civil register as N4017B. It's a genuine Tutor and not an ex. Malaysian AF Tebuan.bizjets101 wrote: Are there any other Canadian Armed Forces Tutors in private ownership???

Very cool - seems it was purchased in October 2000 by current owners.
So of all the Tutors - how did the CAF come to sell two aircraft privately??? Wonder when they
sold them, why, and for how much???

Click Here photo of Air Spray's Canadair F-86E MK6 C-GBUI.
Currently performing at USA airshows as N186PJ of Premier Jets of Hillsboro OR - it went to a great home of aircraft enthusiasts - they have a F-104G, BAC Jet Provost, Hawker Hunter and
three Mig 21's - among their jets . . .

Click Here Vintage Wings of Canada website. It explains their F-86 along with photos - though I did get to tell Chris Hatfield the registration C-GSBR was Steven B. Roman's Gulfstream registration!! (Denison Mines)

This one is a Mk VI and was owned by a Klingon Warrior - Micheal Dorn - he actually sold it to Frank Borman (NASA Astronaut) and bought a Sabreliner Corporate Jet.

This was one of two F-4D's my friend had at Mojave - the Military offered him a F-18B - he wanted an F-15 - they wouldn't give him one - so he turned down the F-18 and kept the F-4D!
Funny story about the F-4D above - my friend had a contract from Honda to test their jet engine and wings for their new biz jet. So he bought a T-33 and put Honda wings on it!!, and the Honda engine he had mounted on the forward fuselage of a B727.
The F-4D above (the other one was N402AV) the back seat wasn't in it - a bunch of Honda officials came to visit and all wanted rides in the F-4 - so my buddy put a lawn chair in the back and did high speed taxi runs at Mojave with the Honda Exec's strapped into a the lawn chair!!
