Question about an internal references
So after a fairly thorough search on here about the Internal References at Wastjet I couldn't come up with anything.
My situation is that I'm nowhere near applying for a job at an airline with just over 1000 hours but someone I know who has worked on the customer service side at Westjet for a long time called me the other day offering to submit an internal reference for me. I graciously declined as i'm not looking to apply now but it brought up a couple questions...
1) How does the system work? I assume that I would want them to submit one at the time I apply, but if she did submit one now, would it be kept on file for a period of time and possibly be there when I did apply?
2) Applying for a pilot position, is it just as advantageous for someone who is not air crew to submit one for me? would one from a pilot be weighted more heavily?
Thanks!

Re: Question about an internal references
I don't work at WJA so my comments are more 'general'.
1 - why not apply now? It builds a file and one day 5-10 years down the road when you get that interview you can say 'I've been applying since I had 1000 hrs' it shows you have had a strong desire to work there (which you obviously do). Also it keeps your eye on your goal, I started applying to AC when I had 250hrs, WJA a few years later.
2 - any internal reference is worth something, obviously a flying one is worth more, and a manager worth even more, that's the same for any company. I have had not pilot internal references for awhile.
3 - I just realized that since I don't work for either of the above mentioned airlines perhaps you shouldn't take my advice!

Good luck in your career.

Re: Question about an internal references
Its kinda backwards. You're buddy submits the internal refrence then you should get a email that says you have been recommended for a job, please submit your CV. Once you're resume comes in you can adjust it as time goes on but it basically goes into a pot and it may pop out. they will put in the criteria and the computer will spit out the best matches. Ask Dave P he'll set you straight.

Out of curiosity, is it possible to be hired at WestJet as a pilot without an internal reference?
Thanks for any insights.

On the AME side it seems to be a requirement. I imagine with the thousands of pilot applications that Calgary recieves, it is required to get your foot in the door??

Re: Question about an internal references
Internal references are pretty much a must. I heard a stat once that there was 3000 pilot resumes and 1000 have internal references. Unless you have PIC time in the space shuttle you probably need a reference.
Re: Question about an internal references
Another question about internals if anyone knows. Once you have been referenced by someone or a few people is there any way of checking whether those references are attached to your file correctly? Or that all of them are there etc....?
Re: Question about an internal references
Hi,
Unfortunately we don't let you know who has or hasn't put references in.
The reason being is that some people do them and others don't. If someone didn't put it in - then that is their choice. We don't want you hassling them. Hopefully they are honest and up front if they intend to recommend you. Face it, another factor is pilots don't like paperwork! All you can really go by is their word.
Hope that helps,
Dave.

Hello DaveP,
Thanks for the insight. I never thought of it that way, that does make sense.

Space shuttle won't do you much good. It may be PIC, but no jet, no turboprop, just glider time; it doesn't score on the matrix.stickontheice wrote:Internal references are pretty much a must.
