How do I get a gun?

Post by . ._ »

I was wondering how to do this.

I know there are courses and licenses and stuff, but I can't find a website that says:

1. Do this.
2. Do this.
3. You should probably do this as a safety precaution.
4. Pull trigger legally.
5. etc.

Thanks. I'm pretty sure I will be the best hunter/shooter in the world because I'm already the best pilot. 8)

Well you have to take the Firearm Safety Course, which will give you the Possession Acquisition Licence or the Possession Only Licence(Useless cause you can't buy anything).

Now if you want to hunt you now must take the Hunters Safety Course, which will give you depending on your province the Outdoors Card/Paper work to allow you to by the hunting tags.

If all you wanna do is do some shooting forget about step 2. The courses are short, usually a weekend with a multiple choice exam at the end. Once completed you will be able to purchase your firearm/ammo and go shoot abunch of fun toys.

Enjoy,

If there is anything else, feel free to ask

OK. Now I know what I'm in for.

Do ya think the local gun shop would have info on all of that stuff? (Local course dates, etc.)

Not quite. The Firearm safety course only gets you a certificate and an application form to get the PAL. After you take the course and get these, you then have to go to your local police station and give them the application and fill out some other security check forms. If you pass their scrutiny, you can expect to get a notification in the mail or by phone that you have passed in about a week, but I've heard of up to a month (which still beats TC's turnaround time of up to 90 days, so I'm not complaining). When I did this they also wouldn't mail the PAL, but you had to go and pick it up at the police station, where you had to of course show appropriate ID (again) one of which had to be photo.

The local gun shop should be particularly helpfull. They can't sell you stuff if they don't set you up with the permits and courses you need.

Not sure how long ago you went though the process but it's a lot easier than what you just wrote..
.
Step one: Attend a firearms safety course. You can either do a non restricted course and then do the restricted course if you wish. Written exam at the end of each course. For couse information, your local shooting club, or sportman's store should be able to tell you where and when such courses are offered.

If you want to eventually go hunting you will have to do a hunters education safety course. I did all the above in a long weekend.

Step two: Submit course certificate to the CFC. (The course I took had my instructor submit all the paperwork on my behalf)

Step three: Wait

Step four: The CFC (RCMP in Miramichi) will contact your listed refferences and ex-spouse if applicable to determine any underlying issues which may preclude you from obtaining a regular PAL or restricted PAL.

Step 5: Wait

Step 6: Should you be found to be suitable to be issued a PAL, the CFC will then mail you (registered mail) your certificate(s) once received you will be able to purchase a rifle and or hand guns (if you are granted a restricted PAL) and ammunition.

In Ontario, the MNR will issue your outdoors card if so applied for. Once you have requested and paid for your "tag's" you will be able to lawfully hunt in designated zones at different times of year...

Hope this helps you ISTP!

Regards,
TPC.

ISTP .... we've interacted a long time here on AvCanada .... all you had to do was ask, and I'd be glad to send you a rifle or shotgun through the mail with no return address on the package.

After all, in other threads, a few posters have expressed their belief that the marketing of guns is one of the main reasons for persons being a gun owner in the first place .... right?

I'll bet that's why you want one ... because you can see the immense profit to be made in selling guns to crooks and scumbags.

And .... now that you've started to be concerned with buying bank stocks and generally planning for a secure financial future, you can see the potential in becoming an international arms dealer.

So, just send me $200 ... (cash, no receipt of course, in small unmarked previously circulated bills) .... and I'll whip a gun your way in a real hurry so you can sell it to some gang member in Toronto for a pretty penny. These are hot temperature times in T-O, so there should be lots of violence that could increase the demand for "a gat."

See ISTP .... isn't it fun being a budding Capitalist? Before too long, you'll know just how good it feels to apply the Cat O' Nine Tails to the back of the day's most unproductive employee.

Quadruply so if its a union shop and they think they own the place.

Don't our descriptions pretty much match? Only difference was your step 2, the course only gave us the certificate, and you had to go to the cop shop to make the application.

Edit: BTW it was about six years ago when I did this in Alberta. I should note that having previously had a FAC didn't expedite the process.

OFD, thank you for your kind offer and concern about my financial future.

I will unfortunately have to decline, as The Oracle of Omaha has persuaded me to think long term about investing. The market for illegal guns is also quite saturated at the moment, and because I would be a start-up company in the trade, my advertising and marketing budget to punks in big cities would have to be quite large if I were to establish myself as a reputable "player". This would negatively affect my cash flow in the short-term, and I doubt I would be able to secure an adequate line of credit from any financial institution. Vito's Loan Shark services has offered me a partnership deal with quite a large credit line, however with high interest and unacceptable non-payment terms. (broken knee caps, sledge hammer to the hand, etc.)

At this juncture, I will be content with learning how to shoot so that one day if I'm at my dream farm on Manitoulin Island and some pesky deer wishes to wander in past my fence to dine on my heirloom tomatoes and lettuce, he or she will become some tasty sausage.

Thanks for the other replies from other people here too. I think my best bet would be to slide on down to the sporting goods store one of these days.

I've also discussed this with my Comrade In Romance and she seems keen to take any applicable courses with me. Read back correct! We've got clearance!

OK .... ISTP or whoever you are .... what have you done with the guy who normally posts under this screen name?

Next you'll be quoting one of the greatest Presidents and leaders of all time, Ronald Reagan.

Dreaming of being a land owner on Manitoulin? Drawing a bead on Bambi's mother? Buying bank stocks? Writing intelligently about costs vs benefit?

Something is wrong ISTP ... very wrong. Perhaps you need to re-read the Communist Manifesto to boost your spirits and get back to your roots .... or maybe plan a winter trip to Cuba to rejuvenate your belief in the wonders of the communist system and way of life, where even a man of your humble beginnings can aspire to the lofty position as a lifeguard at a two star resort and give up 85% of your tip money to "The Party."

I'm worried man ..... what will I do if you actually mature, and I don't have my favourite "self declared Communist" to banter with any longer?

Can swapping stock tips and dsicussing cutting welfare benefits be far behind?

All in fun ...

ISTP

Don't do what I did and just get the POL. What a waste of plastic that was. Because I had a rifle already procured prior to the POL/PAL implementation I did not feel I needed to expand my arsenal. I do regret this. I should of got the PAL because at the time they were giving them away with any clarification of an existing FAC. I could of got a PAL with out jumping through the hoops. But now... Oh I can buy all the ammo I need but to purchase said firearm to expend said projectiles is another matter. (OFD has since helped me to secure said items to persue my ambitions. And note to Authorities it is not, repeat NOT, Old Fog Ducker but Owly Frog Duker. Were still good, right Foggy?)

Anyway if you are to get a license go all the way to restricted. No, really. Go all the way. Go big or go home with a restricted. Even if you think you will never use it it is better to have it. Because once you have smelt the expenditures of a a bit of lead and felt the recoil of a weapon of destruction, you will want more. And more. Never has a drug been so addicting as the air filled with burnt sulpher and cordite and the ring of the everlasting echo of a firearm report.

See yah at the range...

(Now back to mounting my semi-auto .22s to the wings of my 172 and go strafe some pesky gophers.)

Darkwing ..... you're my kind of guy. Obviously, you've enjoyed the thrill of controlling your breathing and heart rate, then slowly squeezing the trigger whle holding the cross-hairs on the forehead of a gopher as a part of simulating a hold up and hostage taking at a Liquor Store in East Los Angeles.

The only thing better than touching off a large calibre weapon, is touching off a series of five round bursts from a large calibre automatic weapon.

Although I never qualified on one, I fired a few hundred rounds through the 50 Cal Browning as a "guest" on the range.... what a treat that was!

Have look at these links to get an idea of this baby ..... the first one demonstrates poor fire control with the long bursts , ... (hard on the barrel life) ... http://youtu.be/gMOmLknUnxU

This one is better ... http://youtu.be/PTtl9rEN3L8 but he has his legs crossed at the anklee for some reason.

Think what you could do to a good sized field of those Communist Gophers living on their collectives ... tee he.

The local gun shop should be very helpful in giving you info. or go on CanadianGunnutz.com lots of help there also will see my nic there LOL.
As i think was mentioned you can challenge the test without the course, but if your new to guns the course is a good idea anyway. The course i took was put on by a few guns who were in it for the fun, the course cost $80.00 most will charge you around $200. After you do the course and your test you send in your forms for your PAL, then wait like 3 months LOL and will receive your Pal. you can then purchase Unrestricted guns. If you want hand guns you will need to get your restricted lic to purchase those, you will also have to apply for a permit to transport them.

Please do not waste your money on the course unless you really have no experience with firearms. Just challenge the exam. If you are old enough to remember the old green MOT handbook everyone read before getting thier 365, you get the hint. Download the course handbook and read it. If you finish it scratching your head, maybe the course is a good idea, but for most it's wasted money and time.

The exam is 50 questions all multiple choice. You need to get 40 right. The second half of the test is about gun handling. You'll need to be able to identify, make safe, identify the appropriate ammo, load, carry, and unload. Again, you'll need to get 80% to pass, and muzzle issues can mean an automatic fail.

If you are near the north GTA, pm me if you need a hand.

The first video made me cringe.

As for the ankle crossed, it's a carry over from firing the M16 in the sitting posistion.

I have a video somewhere firing the Mk19. Now that is a gopher gun!

Once you get the course info at the gun store, buy the course book and study it before attending the course.

Good Luck and have fun.

Go to a bar. Not the one the college girls go to. Tell the bartender you want to buy a gun and a pint. While pulling the tap he will curse about not being a friggen sporting goods store. Go piss out your pint and a voice from the next stall will say bring $300.00 to the van in the parking lot in ten minutes.

No written test required.
Make and color will vary with this method.
